stiff clutch fan

how stiff should your clutch fan be? it sounds like i can hear the whistle on it coming on. its only like 50 outside, engine temp is around 180,and i pop the hood felt the clutch fan and its was pretty stiff. i could move it but took a lil effort...

im also getting around 14-15 MPG could this be the root cause for this?

If you really won't feel good about it, you can dasassemble the clutch and clean it. Occasionally they will gum up, but the mileage is unlikely coming from the fan. The replacement electric jobs are only good for about 1/2 a mpg, so . . .
Mine is stiff too, but it's not like trying to turn the motor over or anything.

If you give the fan a spin by hand after the engine is well warmed up and it freewheels more than a quarter turn then the clutch is bad and won't lock when it's supposed to.
As long as you can spin it without great effort it's fine.

If its locked up solid then its bad but as already mentioned, they are normally stiff and should have zero play in all directions. The roar from the engine fan is quite loud. Are you sure thats what you're hearing?

Agreed, if you are hearing a whistling I would be checking for a boost leak! The fan is as Katoom mentioned, a very loud roaring. First time I had mine locked and come on I wondered what the heck was wrong with the truck. If you've ever heard a semi's fan lock up, it is loud! Our engines sound like that, just a bit smaller, lol
