I know a guy who ran his 30 miles with temps at 1300 to 1600 egt's.
He melted two pistons, dropped valves and scored the cylinder walls.
He was told 1300-1400 would never hurt it.
Want to do that?
Of course not.
Respect it and it will run a long time.

Question is what rpm is it running at those temps?
Can you simply downshift to get you thru it.
There's his problem. Short burst into that range aren't a problem, but if he was stupid enough to sustain those temps for that period of time he deserved it. How's the saying go, common sense isn't so common?

Also depends on the year of truck. I can see a CR having more piston melting issues than a VP truck. 1st gen non IC trucks drive at that egt's all day long. We also have run trucks over 2000 deg's on the pyro, no melted pistons. Don't recommend doing it. Biggest issue is the cylinder to piston clearnaces, CR run a tighter piston/cylinder and ring gap than the VP/P7100 engines. Big design change in piston cooling jets in the CR engine as well.

In my opinion you have to know your truck a little bit to. I know my truck with 33's and 3.55's is only capable of so much. Flat ground pulling I wont get above 1100 with my foot to the floor. When Pulling up a MTN with a load and my EGT's get to 1150-1200 I know I need to start backing off or down shifting because it will push 1300+ quickly. I need to start thinking about Trans temp as well. They go pretty hand in hand, if one is high the other probably is to. All of our trucks operate a little differently, and some of us are a little more liberal or conservative with our driving style. I know my truck and I am comfortably briefly towing at/up to 1200. Pulling the Grape Vine in SoCal, or the Siskiyou's in the Pac NW with a load I have hit it and maintained it a couple times, and truck did fine. Its a safe level that gives a little cushion. Not everybody will agree but its a thought.

I start taking it easy at 1150 ish, back off a little more at 1200, lift my foot at 1300 unless I really need to keep speed up (has happened once). That's with my 07. My 12v can hit 1500 on a WOT run but that's momentary only. Everybody has to decide on what they think is safe and suffer the consequences.
