New gas cans AAArrrgg
~
Tonight I had to put gas in my plow truck. Can’t drive it on the highway because of its chains so I use my large five gallon gas can stash to fill it with.
It reminded me of how irritated I am at our “new, improved, green” gas cans I am.
This is a picture of my favorite style of gas can (my metal cans are finally showing their age). Vented with a flexible spout. You can use it without spilling a drop. They are low profile and can be stacked.

In the last few years in CA I had the opportunity to use several new can styles since you cannot get the old style anymore.
On the side of the can they all say proudly “The vent is built into Spout” like they are doing you a favor.
Every one of the new cans I have used was incredibly slow, dripped fuel, the non-flex spout caused aiming spills and they wound up
with a lot of wasted gas including the couple of tablespoons of gas left in the fancy spouts of the newer cans.
Three years ago I bought the last 11 old style cans I could find from a Woolco (Wal-Mart) in Canada for some friends in the states
(I also got two five gal toilets). Wish I would have gotten more.
It’s crazy that the powers that be have created gas cans that waste so much gas and pollute so much all in the name of being green.

Just go online to jegs or summit or speedway motors and buy some "utility" jugs, most of them don't call them fuel jugs anymore, and a long spout funnel, I cut a little off the end so it fits but flows better. they are alot easier to pour with and more stable in the back of the bed.

I also use a "poor man's aux fuel tank" (multiple 5 gallon cans/jugs)
I bought a flex funnel like this one.
I cut the narrow end off at the begining of the accordian pleats.
It fits snugly into the filler neck, then I just take the whole cap/filler/vent off the 5 gallon can/jug and pour directly into the funnel.
Works for me........

Bark, when I was working in Atlanta a buddy of mine had some 5 gallon cans made by Justrite. They had a metal bolt on spout and they did not leak when emptying the can. They're available with 2 hose sizes, 5/8" or 1" and they empty fast. The biggest draw back is the price, $60 on ebay. They do come with a 10 year warranty though.

Hey Bark, since you reside in a semi civilized society "up there",can you still purchase some NATO gas/fuel/oil 20 ltr.cans? They do not ever leak(with good gaskets),never wear out, stack well, empty fast,and....and...aw shucks I ran outta adjectives.

I'm surprised you don't have to use hr metal safety cans when you are working. I am required to use them in order to meet OSHA requirements ( and have been checked).....boy are they fun to use and fill up.

A heads up for you guys: We were on a fishing trip in BC last year and had two of the new cans along. On the way out to camp the seas and wind had kicked up and we took some water over the bow a few times. A day or two later we went to top her off and when I opened the valve on the "improved" can, seawater that had accumulated in the spout went into the fresh fuel. My buddy didn't want salt water in his brand new 250 Merc so we donated it to the camp foreman.
If you expose the new style cans to water, dump out the spout before you open it!!

We have some cans at work that has a valve on the tube. When you stick it in the filler neck the valve opens to let the fuel out. It works really good, but I haven't been able to find any more. Of course!

Check out the type II cans from Justrite. They're pricey but very easy to use. I have several type I cans and the plastic spout isn't great. They will dribble a little fuel and they're hard to fill. The type II will be the next one I buy.

I guess I have one type II can......much easier to pour, but still a bit of a pain to fill

Good suggestions (and comments) but it still frosts me that you can't just buy a good can with a spout and manuel vent for 8 bucks. The govt is here to help you.
