boost?????

hi,
first off i'm a newbie in here on cummins engines but do know about turbo's (i own a 12 second eagle talon). how much boost can the stock engine hold, how much boost comes from the factory, will the intercooler be able to cool the extra psi, is the mbc the same with these as they are with turbo gas cars, and are the stock injectors and pump going to be able to push enough fuel to keep the engine safe at higher boost levels???
thank u for any response

Re:boost?????

You need more fuel to get more boost.
See if you can find an Edge EZ box that will get you an extra 50 to 60 HP and comes with a boost fooler.
Is this an Auto or 6spd?

Re:boost?????

The max boost on these is 18 to 20 any higher will set a high boost code. The EZ is sold a the online store here, but I think its more than 5 hundred you may have to try and find a used one for that price, check the classifieds here and at TDR.

Re:boost?????

First off.........forget everything you "know" about gas engines, diesels are a different breed. Just turning up the boost will NOT gain you horsepower. In a diesel you must add Fuel and Air to get more power. 35 to 50 psi is the common daily drivers on single turbos, when you factor in twins its a different story. The engine internals can take it just fine you just have to watch the EGT's. So your FIRST mod should be a EGT gauge, boost, fuel pressure. You could port out the turbo but it wouldn't gain you very much using the stock turbo. Better off getting a bigger turbo when the time comes. The simplest plug ins are the mild fueling boxes that plug in in a few minutes and provide usully 35 to 40 peak hp gain, the advertised "bigger" number is usually found down in the lower RPM's. The intercooler is "rated" at 50psi according to some people. Stock turbo would handle 35 to 40 psi no problem, no sense in going higher tho. Injectors are fairly easy to change and can be from mild to wild. Starting at 40hp upto over 200hp. Then you have the wild fueling boxes, that provide 125 to 200hp, but these require you pierce the injection pump wire.

Oh and after ya buy all the goodie power stuff don't forget a new clutch!

On the exhaust, the common practice is to put a new 4" system on.

This should be enough to get you started.

Re:boost?????

Really guys you are going overboard with this lad, Personally find a used EZ edge box on here and get it for your dad make sure its the right year. You dad will love you and his truck they really make these things turn on big time. I had an EZ box in my 99 truck with no gauges and no tranny upgrades in the automatic and had no probs with anything after towing a 36' enclosed pace american trailer. The truck worked flawlessly and I had no gauges installed or anything. However if you were to go beyone that set up I would highly recommend the gauges however I am running 400 RWHP and my gauges never get high enough to make me get out of it. I just like to have them so that if I have a prob with the truck I can tell where!
If I were you just get an edge box or also the Diablo power puck both work very very well on these trucks. I can assure you that you WILL feel the power its not like modding a gasser and you feel a little here a little there with an edge box it will be night and day difference guaranteed!

Re:boost?????

40 psi is the most I would go without O-ringing the head. Get an Edge EZ. About 40 hp to the wheels and 200 lb.ft. of torque to the wheels. All the torque comes in at 1600-1800 rpm. Very nice. Buy a used one. They require I believe 3 plug in connections (MAP sensor, Data port sensor, and power from a fuse) and then a ground. I've got my comp hooked up that way and I can completely remove it and the turnbuckle (clamps wastegate shut for more boost) in less than 15 mins. Drop me a line if you have any question about anything.
