Water pump failure story...you would think i made this up
Edit: meant to put this in 2003-06. but works here also.
I am moving from Seattle to Key west towing a 18ft (10k) trailer. Going up and down the passes out of Salt Lake east bound on I-80 i heard a horrible grinding noise from under the hood. i pulled over and saw my water pump pully about to fall off. I get on the road and pull into Park City area. When i get onto a side road the pump failed and coolant just starts pouring out. I shut it off and throw a catch pan under to get most of the coolant. I call my roadside assistance and they only cover my truck, not the trailer. So i drop the trailer and leave my wife with her car there on the side of the road while i get the truck to a shop. Meanwhile, i have a new pump being delivered to the shop. After getting dropped off, the shop said the pump should be here any minute. Meanwhile i pull the old one off in 5 mins and wait. 30 mins later (about 1pm) i get the pump. Here comes the fun part. I fight with this pump for hours. If you ever changed out a pump, you can barely get 1 hand in there. So its a task trying to hold the pump in place and get a screw started. After hours of bloodying up my knuckles and scrapping most of the skin off my arms i find out the holes arnt lining up, its a jacked up pump, the holes are drilled wrong. its about 4:30 now and the shop calls other parts store and none of them have the part. the closest part is in Salt lake city an hr away. One of the shop guys get on the road to get the part. Remember, my wife is sitting on the side of a road with my trailer, 2 cats and her car for the past 6 hours now. its after 6pm and they get back with the part. It takes me 5 mins to get the new pump in. fill it up with tap water and i go grab my trailer and wife and im back on the road. Something that should have been a 15 mins fix took over 6 hours. Mad and ticked off cannot describe my frustration. Just a FYI, it was a carquest part.
Moral of the story, a waterpump can be changed on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. I am glad our pumps are only held in with 2 10mm bolts.

Advocate of getting the ban button used on him...
That would really ruin a trip. Glad it is all good now. Hope the wife wasn't too upset. I know mine would be, at least for a little while

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!
Just make sure the drain hole goes to the bottom.
I carry a spare pump and 10mm wrench with me at all times. Also carry a spare belt. Consider it cheap insurance.

i tried every which way possible to get that pump on but i knew it was suppose to go drain hole down. I should have known better and tested the bolt pattern after a few failed tries, but i was under pressure to get back on the road and took the fact it was a new part for gran-it. live and learn. im 1700 miles from the failure and still running strong.

When I replaced my water pump the guy at Cummins needed the serial number off my motor. He said there were several different pumps for the ISB series motors. They all looked the same but they are slightly different.
I also had to change mine on the side of the road. I heard a grinding noise, the water temp gauge pegged out and when I turned off the truck about two gallons of coolant ran out of the pump housing. Not fun @ 4AM on the way to work and no parts stores open.

some of the later cummins pumps are thicker casting where the drain hole is in the casting, they hit the tin on the front timing cover.
you just take them to the grinder and make a little clearance , takes about ten seconds, the bolt holes are not in different place!!
Sorry you lost all that time but it wasn't carquest fault, you just didn't know what you were loooking at.
I have ran into the same thing with genuine cummins pumps!!!

it is a very slight modification purple, and no if you get a genuine cummins pump by cpl you won't run into this problem.
but setting six hours as opposed to a ten second mod seems like a no brainer to me.

Ran in to the same "hit the tin" problem with a Cummins pump after giving them the CPL. Luckily I was in my driveway and not on the side of the road like the OP.
