transfer tank
Ive built "used oil storage tanks" for people and they have decided to use it as an aux tank
easiest way -
take out the metal filler neck
run the drain from aux tank into big factory filler hose
extend the factory vent hose up into box and into top of the (vented) tank
also to be fair the vent on your aux tank should be built so that in case of a roll over it will plug itself and not leak
some of our trucks also have a small vent on top of the tank . it will need to be plugged or you will have a large spill
this can be done with any type of container from a beer keg to a custom built "box" to fit

I use these.
Just tie 4 in the bed when on a road trip.
Cheap, and you don't have all that weight you're carrying around when your just putting around town.

I think Northerntool.com has pretty good prices on the regular style transfer/aux tanks.
Or check ebay.

I installed a horizontal 200 gallon home heating oil tank in the bed of my truck. I have a cap. I have a pump in the bed, swithched from in the cab. Oddly the fuel siphons into the truck tank on it's own. It doesn't ever overflow, or even fill right to the cap.I tied the fill line from the bed tank into the small vent line running from the truck tank to the door.

In my search for aux tanks for my vegoil mod, Ive found that tempo 12gal 10x10x30 or so tanks should fit in the dead spaces under the cab doors. Theyre like 129$ apiece though.
Theres a company that makes tanks molded to fit in the dead space in the sides of the bed over the wheels, but theyre like 350$ apiece and you cna use up to four units to fill both sides of the bed.
You can get a toolbox/fuel tank combo but theyre well into 1000$.
If I had a way to string several jerry-cans together with heaters for them all Id be using those, theyre cheap.
