Scared about boost after new turbo

I just got done putting on a used 62/14 and in 4th, 5th gear I can hit 47-50 psi. I can regulate it with my foot but I dont have any idea at what the waste gate is set at. Before I installed it I put the air compressor to the wastegate and it started to open at 40 psi. Im scared lol, I dont wanna blow it up. I can still hit 1500 degrees on a 60 to 95 mph run. I know how to turn up the boost but how do I turn it down? I have a stock head gasket and Im hoping to keep it awhile. One other thing, Im mad once again at my Valair clutch. This clutch has NO forgiveness! I did a 3rd gear roll, still had my foot in it at about 1200 rpms when I grabbed 4th, hit 5th and it slipped! I can not put any heat at all in this clutch or it will slip weither its on the line or a roll.

I am super happy with this kuk-pro gold I got. I drive my truck hard, real hard sometimes and that thing will not slip. one night I kinda thought i slipped it cause it smeeld a bit, but the next day if felt good as new again. and I will do 20 km/h in 4th and then hold my foot to the floor, so I am working it.

Can't help you on the boost, but have you called Dan about your clutch issues?

To lower the boost, you need to lengthen the rod on the wastegate. I have heard that you can just turn the nut on the rod & it will lengthen/shorten it. I just read this on another post last week, but can't remember where. I have always unhooked the rod from the wastegate by taking off the small clip, turn the rod to where I need it & use my air compressor with a blow gun on the actuator hose to move the rod. Also make sure that the turbo doesn't have a adjustable boost elbow installed, if it does then you need to turn the allen key counterclockwise to lower boost.

You could obviously invest in a set of studs or ever retorque your stock headbolts, but in the mean time the most important thing to remember is to make sure the truck is fully warmed up before laying into it.

J Lent, I haven't had a chance to mess with it today. I did not check the elbow yet. Whats a safe level to set the boost at if I can adjust it ?

DisplacedTexan, Ive about given up on my clutch. I dont think Dan can do anything about it for me, its really more me driving then the clutch itself. I want a more forgiving clutch, if I dont almost completely dump the clutch off the line its gonna slip when I hit 3rd everytime. I just cant slip it at all launching and shifting or its gonna let go in the higher gears.

oscaroc, so far so good, its spools close to stock. This turbo is a River City Turbo buts looks just like a HTT.

.
I've always heard that the stock gasket, head bolts are good for 35-40lbs max & that is pushing it. I ran a HTB2 64/65/14, 64/65/12, 62/65/14, 62/65/12 & never blew a stock head gasket running 40 psi. Like the guys have mentioned, make sure the truck is at operating temps before fueling it.

Yes sir I have takin up to operating temp before playing with the fuel. OK I pulled the elbow out and it has a small orfice in it slow the boost down to the wastegate. I figure I would pull my boost elbow out of my HX35 which is a Edge boost elbow from an Edge Comp I had and switch them. Only problem is they're the same. How about taking a small bit and drilling it out alittle to let some more boost in to open the gate sooner? The smaller orfice ups the boost so in theory a bigger opening should lower it. I was thinking of going this route for 2 reasons, I have two elbows so I can always put the one that it came with back in, and its a pain to get to the wastegate. My boost elbow knowledge is based all on the hx35, Im still learning on this turbo. This turbo was used as the top turbo in a set of twins so it was clocked different and they could have messed with the wastegate to.

You could drill it out, but I'm sure that someone will trade you elbows. I would.

Yea I just drilled it out alittle and I ran into another problem. I was cruisin in 5th letting the engine warm up and heard a nice pop, rpms shot up. Hummmm checked all gauges went to 4th gear, ran fine, 5th nothin, proceeded to use some words not allowed on here. So now I need a 5th gear update nut and hopefully I didn't hurt the shaft. I did get on it in 4th I hit about 35 psi so thats good, 5th is where it would hit all the boost so hopefully it will be down to around 40 psi now. I couldn't tell if the truck was surging or breaking loose, the roads are really wet here right now. I did notice that it will hit 35 psi in 4th and as soon as the truck gets to redline it drops to 20-25psi. I didn't think this truck would defuel so hard with the TST and updated Smarty.
