Raptor or AirDog?
Raptor or AirDog?
Hey guys. If this has been beaten to death before, sorry . Don't flog me to bad.
I currently have 126k miles on my stock LP in the truck in my sig. I 'm looking to pull the trigger on a new pump setup before mine bites the dust.
I 'm in a debacle over which system to go with. I 'm sure the AD is far superior to the Raptor but I'm having a hard time justifying the almost $600 price tag for that setup.
Here's what I need help sorting through.
On the AD system, I keep reading about a draw straw/ 1/4 tank fuel issue? Would I have to remove my bed/drop the tank in order to install? Could my original LP be left in and operable in case the AD fails?
On the Raptor system, I understand it's just the pump by it's self. Does it just hook up to the OEM LP and pull extra fuel and run it through my firewall mounted filter? Would it be worthwhile to install a second fuel filter and "pretend" I have the AirDog setup?
I did a little looking/reading and have been seeing that these aftermarket systems run about 18psi, and the CP3 likes it to be between 8-12psi. Any reported issues with this or am I just misinformed?

I haven't been able to figure this out either. My Outlook monitor shows good injection pressure even when romping on crazy larry. I see the CAT 2micron filter setup and wonder if I really need an airdog before mine fails or just the CAT system for $170. Been thinking about a new turbo, perhaps it won't keep up after that. IDK.
SUBSCRIBED.

Does your Outlook show Rail Pressure or Fuel Pressure? My FP holds real steady at 10psi. My RP is right where it should be aswell.
I forgot to mention in the original post. Eventually i'll put on a larger turbo, a small set of injectors and a CP3 "bag of pats" and would like to make a solid 450-475 horse. Is the Raptor capable of handling this or is that a job best left suited to the AD?

You sound like you're on the same path as I am. II's CP3 bag o parts, larger turbo for towing (62/65/14?), and some 50-90hp nozzles.
Outlook reads injection control pressure - rail pressure. I never watched it intently, but seems limited to low 20k when I look.
Edit: Just went and picked up the kids. 23k at WOT on crazy larry.

Thanks for the info. Im still a little foggy on the term "draw straw", is this just a tube that sits deep in the tank and supplies the fuel to the AD/Raptor pump?
If I were to leave my factory mounted pump/filter housing in what does the AD system connect to, directly to the CP3? Would I have to run a switch of some sort or physically re- connect lines to get the OEM setup running if the AD system goes south?

How would I go about verifying for sure it's still original?
The pump is located on the rear of the fuel filter housing and is black in color. Since you purchased the truck with 20k on it, chances are very good that it's original. When they went out under the warranty period, Dodge removed it and installed the pumps in the tank. If you can see the pump on the filter housing, it's sure to be original.
Since you have this pump...replacing it is not very difficult and does not require a draw straw at all. I replaced my filter mounted pump recently as a precautionary measure. I purchased a Raptor 100 from Lary at the DTR store and am very pleased with the great service Lary provides. The Raptor 100 is capable of supporting up to 500 hp. Raptor 100 and the 150 series pumps connect to the stock fuel tank sending unit and the rear of the filter housing. They do not require the fuel tank to be dropped in order to perform the install.

I have attached a copy of the stock fuel pump location from the service manual. I hope you find this helpful!
