plunger return springs?

I have done some searching on these inj pump springs and i am starting to think i might have a broken one. The problem is i cant seem to find any way to know for sure if mine are shot. Has anybody else had these fail?
What are the telltale signs of plunger spring failure?

whene I did fuel inj/turbo repair for a living. I would say that 1/2-3/4 of the ve's we got in had broken return spring or springs. if you have one broken it may run just fine but may knock with 2 broken they dont run. that why if someone ask me what parts are need I tell them one of thing that I would replace if you have it down is the springs. ken

When I was picking up my kit to replace the seals in my pump the guy at the shop asked what had happened to the pump. I replied "I don't know, it just started leaking out of several spots." He then got me a spring kit and said that was a sign of broken springs especially if it leaks around the pump head. When I tore it apart he was correct. Had a broken spring.

Yep mine failed. Both of them, it would idle like it was only on 3 cylinders but above 1800ish rpm it would run fine.....Got me home. I can't think of anyway to know for sure they are bad with out taking the pump off and apart. There is a dude on ebay that has them. 50$ if you don't have a local injection shop, he's got the reseal kit too.

Didn't I tell you that could be the problem back in your first thread? Everyone was saying turbo or some junk like that? Or was that a different dude? Oh well no matter.
As soon as mine started doing it, I drove it 8 miles home real easy, not knowing what had happened. Did some little tests and figured it was the return springs, so I pulled the pump. Mine was not leaking at all and I didn't drive it enough to tell you what the symptoms were besides the above. Only other thing I can remember is in the morning it felt like it stumbled a little big leaving the yard after I closed the gate. But I didn't really think much of it. Once I got off work and drove back to the house is when it started running like poo. I don't know if the "stumble" was when the spring actually broke and it took that amount of time to work it's self back?

What did you do to test the pump. I called a local diesel shop and he told me that there was no way to test for the springs and I'm gonna have to bring it in(not really an option)

Um, they are broken springs. Think you need to find a new diesel shop. Here is the part number for the HD return springs 1-467-010-410

Here is a link to my post about the broken springs;
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...p-t294171.html

If you were super slick I suppose you could pop the gear off and see if the shaft has a little in and out play, this may tell you the springs are broken? But I'm not sure about that. But honestly since its a here and now problem I don't see how the springs are the problem, unless it's just one that is broken?
