P-pumpin a 1st gen
P-pumpin a 1st gen
I got a 93 CTD with 190k on it was thinking of tearing that rotary pump off in exchange for an inline. 1st question.......Anyone tried this? 2nd question......What parts besides the inline pump needed? 3rd question......Worth swapping pumps or easier to swap my old 1st gen for a 2nd gen?
My brother-in-law was thinking about doing that. The problem is you need to start by replace the front gear housing. If I remeber right, it was expensive and only a couple people are making them. Add the cost of the housing and other parts to the cost of a p-pump and you may be better off finding a 2nd gen 12 valve engine for the same of less. He gave up looking into it, so, there may be other places that offer conversion kits for much less than he was estimating at the time. In the end, since he was only after 300hp +/-, he decided to stay with the original pump since he can get 300hp + out of those fairly easily too. I should see him sometime this week and I'll ask him where he located the housing and other parts and what he was looking at spending to do it.
As far as I know, and I am no expert keep in mind. You will need a new timing case, pump drive gear, pump, injector lines, injectors (or get yours modified), throttle linkage (depending on what all is on the pump you get), oil feed line for the pump, different lift pump and fuel lines. Also keep in mind you need a solenoid to make it run, or got to a pull cable.
I have seen the hard parts (case, pump, lines, gear) on ebay pretty reasonable, usually from the same seller, so it would help shipping.

Injectors are diff size threads 12MM VS 14MM if your inj have a 9MM tip you can get an adaptor that fits the late style inj 7MM to the 9MM hole in your early head I have done this and it is not that hard and they run a lot better.

I just p-pumped my 91.5 CTD I purchased the pump, lift pump, front housing and yes you need the cover for that housing, oil lines, fuel lines and the second gen injectors fit right in, I did put mine in my 88 GMC while doing the conversion so i needed a new throttle cable and I just used the pull cable for a kill switch, also will need to get a new TV cable for the tranny if it is an Auto. also you will need to get the fuel filter housing off of the 2nd gen cause the p-pump covers up the old fuel filter spot. other than that timing it just check at http://www.cumminsdatabase.com and you will have it running in no time.....
