Oil leak from tranny?

So the other day I walked out to my truck to go to school and there is a bigger then normal sized puddle of oil on the ground, in a rush to get to school I left it be and when I got home let it cool and climbed under it. Holy ***** was there oil everywhere up on the bottom half of the engine and tranny. Its not leaking it just seeps from what I can only imagine was caused by the kdp which browns told me would happen when they JB welded the small crack for me. But the oil is forming a drop at a seam in the tranny (pics included), I dont know the exact part of the tranny so Ill be taking pics and posting them. Is this normal? My clutch feels fine but ever since the day I got my clutch put in theres always been a real tinny noise coming from what sounds like the tranny and only makes a noise when I move. But my clutch feels completely normal. Help me out here guys! I need to keep this hog healthy! Thanks

Hi,

Have you checked the level? The plug is on the PS of the tranny. Needs a special dodge oil that is costly I hear. I have yet to drain mine and replace but have been meaning to.

1st thing you shud proly do is run by the car wash or find a hot pressure washer and clean the holy hell out of everything....thats what i did w mine when i replaced my rear main. made the truck look alot better from the under side and helped with leak detection and location afterwards. otherwise there is a good possibility of chasing your tail with leaks that soak the underside of the truck

Based on the colour of the oil, I suspect transmission oil from the NV.. I would do as instructed and clean the thing off with a pressure washer and then see what happens. Could be as simple as the vent being plugged and the oil being pushed out under heat and pressure or the top boot on the shifter lever has a tear in it.

It looks like the rear seal to me, if it is I think ill be giving the shop a call and have them replace it at their expense. Three months for a rear seal? Dont think so.

Don't think so.. I am edging toward input shaft seal on the tranny. If the engine seal was gone it would be dripping out the vent under the ring gear. The rear seal will leak out onto the flywheel inside face and fling onto the bell housing and down out the hole. Been there, done that. This leak looks like its coming from the NV.

It does look purty under there though..

Is this an easy fix? When I bought my truck I took a chance, the tranny was out of it cause the clutch was done. It was right across the street from browns diesel so I had my dad tow me over there and handed it to them. They put am sb clutch and installed the tranny. And it cost me more then Id like to pay for something I could do myself.

Two things I guess. One, its just a heavy lifting job and having a good tranny jack makes it a much better feat.

Two, why did the seal fail? Is it just over pressure from the vent being plugged or is there some wear in the tranny that is causing the seal to fail. I don't like to be all doom and gloom, but I tend to try and think a little broader. If the seal is failing there is potential that the input shaft is moving too much for the seal like bearing wear. But for the price of the seal and pulling the tranny its not that bad.

IIRC, the input shaft can be pulled right out of the tranny once you get it out with 4 bolts and the bearing and seal all come out with it. I haven't done it but thats what I remember it looking like when I had my tranny on the floor a few years ago.

Haha I dont classify it as gloom and doom, I call it being realistic and prepared! Lets say this is it worth $400 labor plus the price of the seal?

Gear oil coming from that area is possibly from the front countershaft bearing cover, especially if it continues to leak when not running. You can see the lower edge of the cover just below the bell housing. My 95 had a hole rusted in the cover. I drained the oil, cleaned the area well with brake parts cleaner and covered it with high heat silicone, been leak-free for more than a year.
