It should work way better than your stock turbo. Should bolt up, except you may have to push the down pipe back an inch. Just make sure it's a HX-35 from a manual trans truck, not an HY-35 from an auto trans truck. The HY has a 9cm^ turbine housing, possible sky high EGT's.

the housings won't work the downpipes bolt up different on the the nwer trucks, tbut the turbo itself will work great , just have to use your exhaust housing.

That's not entirely true. You can take the backplate with the elbow off the housing and replace it with an old style backplate. Also, on a totally stock truck an HY-35 would be fine, and the instant spoolup would transform the truck.

I have an early model 92 with origional setup it is an auto trans with I assume a wastegate. Would a Hy35 be an improvement for my use as I tow a 27 foot 5th wheel

I put a 98.5 hx35 on my 92'. It bolted up fine in every way. Needed no modification except loosening the clamp on the exhaust to slide it back a lil. The elbow that comes on the newer trucks unbolts and the resulting flange is identical to the one on the stock turbo.

The HY-35 has the elbow cast into the backplate on the turbine housing, meaning you need to either replace the downpipe with a 2nd gen downpipe, or get an HX-35 backplate to swap on the HY-35. I think that on a totally stock truck an HY would be a big improvement, but as you add fuel you will outgrow it quickly. The good thing about HY's is that you can get 'em cheap.

I took my baby up on I-10 this morning and floored it the best boost I could get was about 12 to 13 psi. on the empty truck. I don't remeber getting any thing better when I had the fifth wheel hooked up. I don't want to burn rubber or blow larege clouds of black smoke but it would be nice to get a little more performance going up hill with the load. So which turbo should I put on HY or HX and what is a reasonable price for one of these puppies used with low milage.

Charles-
You don't need to replace your whole turbo, just replacing the turbine housing with a 16 cm or smaller unit would be a huge improvement. It would be cheaper and simpler, too. If you don't plan on adding extra fuel, an HY-35 would be fine - and they are available cheap. An HX-35 would be a better choice if you plan to add injectors or turn the pump up much.

Thanks for the info Wannadiesel. I am going into desert diesel on tuesday to see what the tick tick tick sound I am hearing over the valve clatter is all about it is there hot or cold and idle or reved. I will check the turbo and see if it is still sound and change the housing while I am there. My turbo has 156,000 mile on it so it may be cheaper to repace it if there is some slop in the bearing. At any rate I feel much more comfortable about what I am doing.
