New IP - Lots of smoke

Just got the rebuilt injector pump back from the shop. I had a lot of trouble getting it going, but it will run now. It bellows white smoke and runs kind of rough. I am thinking that I may have washed the cylinders down with fuel while cranking it so much. Or maybe a stuck injector? Any thoughts? Should I just let her run to clear it up?

Thanks,
Fred

I agree, I would crank the timing up. Im guessing you have the first gen engine. If so crank the pump toward the head.

Yup, sounds like timing to me, too. The timing mark on the pump that lines up with the one on the timing case is only valid for the original pump, so don't let that fool you. Push that sucker toward the head about 1/4'' and see what you get!

Thanks for the input - I'll bump the timing and see what happens. I had it going a few minutes ago and the neighbor came over to see if the garage was on fire!

That's great

Reminds me of my younger days with the neighbors.

Isn't it great - they think I am nuts - but so far they have been pretty tolerant. The smoke today was intense.

I was going to call it a night to think of Guy Lombardo and sing Aud Lang Syne, but I couldn't just sit here and watch TV. Out to the garage I went, pushed the pump as far forward as I could - a little less than 1/4 at the mark. Turned the key and BOOM - the happy dance in Diesel land! Unbelievable the difference. Can I push it a bit further?

Happy New year to everyone - Best wishes for a great 2007!

You can ALWAYS push it a bit farther, but repeat after me "I am my own warranty station." In other words, a little goes a long ways sometimes.

When it sounds like a 6.2 liter Chevy you have gone to far.
