Need friction modifier????
I have a 3.54 limited slip rear and was wondering if the front axle called for friction modifier as well? I couldn't find it in my service manual so I thought I would do the easy thing and ask ya'll. I'm getting a slipping/popping feeling when turning slow and hard to the left. I have new track bar, ball joints, axle u-joints and 1 new u-joint on the rear driveshaft (one coming off the transfer case). I changed the rear axle fluid some time ago and added the modifer and haven't had any trouble until now. Does this stuff wear out in under 50K miles? Just looking for answers...thanks.

No, you won't have a limited slip unit in the front axle, and don't need any friction modifier in there. Friction modifier will wear out after as little as 25000 miles. Adding some more to the rear differential would be the first step I'd take. Start with one bottle and drive for a few days to see if it helps, so you don't add too much.

I added a bottle and will see how she does. What can happen if what I put in before wasn't bad and just double up on the modifier by adding another bottle?

It may not ever be noticeable, but it can make the clutches tend to grip less and weaken their holding power.

whats the best friction modifier to put in the rear end? i get a popping sound from time to time when turning sharp either way. it has happened since i got the truck a year and a half ago so i thought it was normal.

The MOPAR stuff is perhaps best. Avaliable from many sources. International trucks, GM and Chebby, aftermarket and sometimes the additive is already in fluild. At least, so they say! Add four onch and do a half dozen figure 8's on empty parking lot at slow speed. Drive for a few days and evulate. May need more or new traklok. JMHO

Just went through this same thing, I contacted the boys at Randy's Ring and Pinion. Their recomendation for friction modifier was Motocraft brand! I was experiencing some clutch chatter after using two bottles of Mopar! Dumped in a 4oz bottle of the Motocraft...chatter gone!
