It gives the turbo a broader efficiency range and reduces surge (or barking, woofing, fluttering, whatever you decide to call it). You will lose some efficiency, but the added benefit of keeping things flowing smoothly far outweighs the drawback. Surge normally occurs at lower RPMs when the turbo is trying to feed the engine more air than it can ingest. I had a thread on the TDR about it a few months ago. Explained surge to my satisfaction, and why it is an issue that needs to be avoided like the plague.

A Map Width Enhancement slot is a superb idea for any turbo.
