Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Hi Everyone,
I had my cold weather enhancement enabled sometime ago. I have seen the fast idle work but until this morning was not sure if the 3 cylinder drop off feature worked. We had temperatures of -6 degrees last night and it had warmed up to +7 degrees when I started my truck. It took a few minutes to get my truck fired up. This is my first winter and I haven't mastered the best way to start the rig yet. Anyway after I fired the rig up I just let it idle and do its thing. It ran at base idle and then ramped upto the high idle. In a short time the motor started this ROAR! The rpm stayed the same but the motor sounded like it was under a tremendous load. Believe me it was a surprise at first. I let the truck run for 15 minutes and it was putting out fairly warm air, engine temp was still under 140 degrees. We started down the street and in 2 blocks the engine temp was over 140 degrees. The warm up feature seemed to be much quicker than anything I had seen before. The sound is very surprising to say the least. Just my $0.02 Ken

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Brings up a question for me -- I don't have the three-cylinder reflash, but when I start the truck in cold weather -- even with the block heater plugged in, the engine will roar for about ten to fifteen seconds, and then quiet down. RPM's remain the same. Are you talking about this -- or the "freight-train rattle" of the three-cylinder start?

GP
Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
I just had mine flashed a week ago. I have seen it work. However this morning when I fired it, it ran for a minute and the idle kicked up to 1200 but it never killed the three cyclinders. Not sure if that is programed to do this or not.
Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Tried to have mine enabled at the dealer last Friday, they said there was no update available. You know where Ill be headed on Monday. Does the '02 already have the feature but just need enableing or does it need a reflash too?

It has to be 15 degrees for the "2nd part" to work.
[/quote]

Its already present on 02 trucks, thats why there is no update for your controller. Tell them to hook up the DRBIII tool and goto the engine section and select "enable" 3 cylinder feature. If they don't understand tell them to call Chrysler and ask.

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Hi Everyone,
Me again...Just to clarify some of the questions about the 3 cylinder drop off. First of all I have an '02 which did not need to be reflashed just enabled..I watched as the Tech did the service and took only minutes, maybe 5 minutes at the most. If you have ever wondered if your rig is shutting down the 3 cylinders then it probably has not been cold enough and never happened. This is nothing compared to the first few minutes of cold temperature rattle. When it happens there will be no doubt that it is taking place..believe me on this. It put the motor into such a deep roar that I walked back to see what was up. I noticed the rpm was still at 1200 and smooth/steady as normal. The motor sounded like it was pulling a steep grade and had a increased air flow through the air filter. I hope this makes sense.

Now this morning I went out to start my truck to master cold weather starts. We saw a low of +4.8 degrees and the overhead temperture in the truck said +25 degrees. I let the perheater do its cycle 4 times before I hit the key...It fired very nicely, but it was a little bit warmer than yesterday. It fast idled but never drop off the cylinders. The specs seem to be fairly accurate. This is my first winter with a diesel so I am still learning. I have been running Power Service at ratio of 12oz.to 35 gallon of fuel to help stop any gelling. I am looking for advice on zero or subzero starts without the use of the block heater. I know that the truck starts much easier with the block heater used but what can I expect for starting without the heater? Is it to be expected to be hard to start when temperatures are down around zero? Is -10 degrees or less starts out of the question without the block heater used? The dealer told me that the truck will fire to a "God Forsaken Low" but needs to be warmed up before any power can be generated. Just do multiple cycles with the perheater and it will fire. I hope the next few days still remain cold so I can figure out the easiest way to start this rig or get it to the dealer so they help me out. Also my truck is parked under a carport but that is the only protection it has. It doesn't sit in a garage. Thanks for any input. Just my $0.02 Ken

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Not sure I understand some of this. The 3 cylinder start is tough on the engine, isn't it? -- that's why it generates quick heat through stress and friction.
Wasn't it put in place to stop varnish build-up that bent valves and push rods in some cases? Which is a "fix" for a design oversight, correct? -- but perhaps better than risking damage in long-term very cold conditions.
So isn't the option there if you live among the polar bears, but not really recommended if you live in the short-term cold of the lower 48 -- excepting Maine or North Dakota, say?

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Hi GP,
The dealer explained it to me like this....Around here in Wyoming a lot of Oil Field Service Trucks are CTD. In the winter they let the motors run 24/7 to keep them warm. You will notice that if it is real cold outside and you let your CTD idle the engine temp will cool off, even if it has been warmed to 190 degrees, they won't build heat just idling. To dangerous levels if the right conditions are present. If the motor gets too cold and continues to idle that it when the valves can get varnished and stick. This feature takes care of any problems while the truck is just idling. It also allows the CTD to warm up faster if temperatures meet the programed specs. Also this option is not for everyone...If your rig never sees temps below 35 degrees you will be wasting your time to enable it. It is for the guys that run with flakes...snow flakes that is.. Hope this helps. Ken

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
I just got mine done a couple hours ago... I doubt the truck will cool down enough by the time I leave work today to see if it's working or not, but it definitely will tomorrow! Plus it's going to get colder this week, maybe i'll get a chance to hear this 3 cylinder roar! ;D

Tony
Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
OK... i'm going to assume they reflashed and never enabled the feature... :
unless you have to sit and wait longer than I did??? I sat for about 3 or 4 minutes and nothing ever happened... does it take longer than that to start or what? ??? It was 18 this morning and I purposely didn't plug it in last night. If not, it's going in thursday for a leak coming from somewhere, so they can attempt to get it correct this time...

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
Hi Tony,
There are a couple of thoughts I have on what you saw or didn't see. First of all we can't rule out the fact that the feature might not have been activated properly. Secondly I know my high idle won't operate if it is warmer than around 35 degrees. I wonder what the temp was in the inside of your garage when you started your truck? Was it below say 30 degrees. I know you said it was 18 degrees but was that outside or garage temp? If your garage temp was 18 degrees and you didn't touch the foot controls then I would say it wasn't enabled correctly. Thirdly once you start your rig you can touch the foot controls for the first few seconds, I estimate for up to 45 seconds. I know this for a fact because I always pull my truck forward after start up to let fumes vent better. About at the 1 minute mark after start up you have been at base idle and then the idle starts to ramp up to the 1200 rpm area. You can't touch any foot controls or the feature is cancelled. If you do cancel the feature and the temp is still cold enough for the feature to reactivate I would assume that the 1 minute lag would apply and the process would start over. I personally have not had temps cold enough for the feature to reactivate. One last comment.. I see your rig is an '02, It will only require an enable, a reflash it not neccesary on the '02s. I hope this helps. Just my $0.02 Ken

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
I'm thinking since my rig was actually built sometime in '01 & bought in Nov '01 that they had to actually do a reflash (I could be wrong). IF they only had to enable it, then they had no clue what they were doing because it took 'em over an hour... :

Now on to the temp. Not sure what the garage temp was/is. I hope it's cold enough outside to get the temps down to meet the criteria for this feature to work:

1. Intake Manifold Temperature less than 0°C (32°F) and,
2. Coolant Temp is less than 60°C (140°F) and,
3. The Transmission is in Neutral or Park and,
4. The Service Brake pedal is not depressed and,
5. Throttle = 0% and,
6. Vehicle Speed = 0 mph

It's 18 out now (windchill makes it feel like 6*). Think that will drop the manifold temp and coolant temp enough?

Re:Cold Weather Enhancement Update
I picked up a 99CTD last fall and had the cweu enabled and the speedometer set for 235 tires. It took me 3 dealers and over 10hrs. to get it done right. I was really ****** when I asked if they knew how to do these procedures and the reply was oh yeah we do it all the time. The 1st shop had a mechanic work on it for 3 hrs. he didn't even look like he could spell his own name. No luck there. 2nd shop was worse he insisted there was no such thing and the speedometer can't be changed. So I asked around and found out how this is done and went to 3rd dealer. His mechanic said he has done this before, then he couldn't find it. I said look under Cummins, then misallanios, then 3 cylinder idle. OH there it is. OK. Then to speedometer, he couldn,t find it either, look under abs, OH there it is, then change tone ring or pinion factor to desired setting, you can cheat this and set for much larger tires. There is lots of adjustment and you could be able to set it for 44" tires.
Moral of this is if the tech doesn't look like he knows how to turn on a PC. Don't expect him to be able to set your trucks ecm.
