key off and running

can any one tell me if leting my truck run with the key in the off pos will hurt any thing?
I'm useing the man shut off and with cold weather seting in I was thinking I could let my truck run wile I went in to the store with the key in my pocket. This would have the steering wheel and doors locked makeing it harder for it to be stolen and still keeping it warm.

i've been letting mine run while i've been in the store but that's usually on base, I don't think it would hurt anything but i would just go get another key made. How are things north of me? it's really nice down here today but it's windy

I have the same problem.......soleniods won't live in my truck. I do occasionally leave the truck running with the ignition off but I like to avoid this if possible. My crazy reasoning for this is the thought of where those little pieces of rubber are going that break off your tip [oscillation]. I don't know how big the chunks are, how many are coming off, and what they will do to my injection pump or fuel system. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm just paranoid.
I just got another key cut..........and I sleep better at night

Won't hurt anything. As far as the computer (and all the rest of the electrical system) is concerned, the truck is off. <insert the usual warnings about extended idling here>

Well, considering those chunks came off while your truck was running, most likely at high speed, if they were going to do any harm, chances are, it would already be done. I lost two plunger tips in 1 month. I've got a cable for the manual lever now. All I have to do is leave work early enough to install it.

I leave mine running with the key off on occasion. My only concern is where does the current the alternator is producing go when the key is turned off? I haven't checked the wiring diagrams to see if the key off kills the field voltage. If it does, then the alt is generating nothing.

you may want to check local laws for leaving your truck running while unattended... illegal here, county executive had his county vehicle stolen from his house while it sat warming up at his house... this was a day after a special segment was aired on TV about how it was illegal to leave car unattended & running

As 92 diesel does, I just pull the key out and go in the store. You will probably be able to wiggle it a bit and do the same.

Our ingition switches are not known for their preciseness, especially with age.

The field is dead when the key is off.

Just its time for a new cylander
I just put in a new cylinder (broke) and switch a couple of weeks ago.
The cylinder comes as a blank from Chrysler and you have to get it keyed by a locksmith to your existing key.
Just figure some time and $$ to get this done. I think it cost me $25 for the locksmith part, and I had to wait a day because I wasn't his priority...I was ok with the timing because I was using a screwdriver to turn the switch.
