Kdp?

Hello, I have a question about the KDP. Where I work, we have been installing 4 and 6bt cummins engines in paving equipment since 1985. I was just on a machine that had 15763 hours on it and they swore the motor had never been touched. It seems that all of these 5.9's run forever. Last fall I rebuilt a 6bt for my dad's road grader(87 with VE), and at the time, was oblivious to the KDP. Could it fall out? Untill getting into the dodge pickups I had never heard of it, is it a dodge only problem? Does it have to do with the p7100?
Thanks
Curt

Curt, I think that's an interesting question. I don't frankly have a clue as to whether the engines Cummins produced for Dodge for their use in light trucks were a different production run than those for industrial use, or if the industrials have a different timing case setup.

I don't see how the injector pump could have anything to do with that dowel pin, though - my understanding from doing a LOT of research and archive reading is that the KDP problem was with a manufacturing run of the locating pins being very slightly undersized. It's not a numbered part, so not trackable - the 12v engines may or may not exhibit the problem with the pin working out of the timing case. I did the tab on ours and replaced the crank seal at the same time - it was beginning to seep a bit anyhow.

I know for sure the 5.9s used in UPS trucks have been plagued with KDP failures.
In fact they even had a campaign to jig fix them all.

Just wondering if I should worry about ours?? If it has ran 20 years without falling out maybe it's ok?

I'm not sure if the 1st gen 12v's had kdp issues... It's a real easy fix though. So I'd go ahead and tap it anyway.
