G56 noise

G56 noise
I just got back from a trip to Telluride from Tucson hauling a heavy truck camper and puller a Jeep Wrangler.
Truck ran great but the gear shifter/tranny would rattle loudly when pulling hard in 4th and 6th gear. If I hold the lever over to the side the noise is less.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm hearing the same noise, started during/after a 3,000 mile vacation pulling the 5th wheel. Mine is not to loud (can't hear it over the radio) Plan to take it to the dealer soon.

6th gear noise
I just got back from a long trip, 12k miles, towing a 6k lb trailer and noticed a tranny noise in 6th that gets much better if I push the shifter to the right.
Is this a problem I should take to the dealer?

Mine has had that noise through the shifter for a long time. I'm at 143K miles now and it still has that noise. I'm gonna say nature of the beast. I used to ride the old manual trans school buses to school when I was a kid. They all made the same noise.......

you do not have your sig filled out. some early g56's left the factory low on fluid. the front bearing is easy to starve, most people run one quart over full. the g56 design amplifies the noise more than the other transmissions. to minimize this they changed the flywheel to a dual mass design. it is a horrible flawed design and will not last.all of ours failed between 35,000 and 75,000 miles. southbend sells about 200 kits a day. the kit has a solid flywheel and a real pilot bearing. with the dmf gone the noise will be louder but perfectly normal.

IF your noise is clutch related, when the time comes for a replacement, move up to a better, stronger clutch and heavier duty hydraulics. Both South Bend and Valiar have some really nice replacements that change out the flywheel.
I am at 50-some K miles, I'm starting to look into clutches because I know mine will need replaced. I am leaning toward the new Valair DD G56 replacement. It's a 3800# DD clutch, complete kit with flywheel and new HD hydraulics, VERY quiet, excellent feedback about quality and performance from those who have installed it.
