Fuel milage report

well here is a copy of my spread sheet so far, rather bumbed out but dont care either way.

Date Millage Gallons MPG Price/Gal notes
5/27/2004 100 7.6 13.1 2.19 town/stock
6/16/2004 193 19.6 9.8 2.09 towing/stock
7/22/2004 203 16 12.6 2.15 town/see sig for mods

now i have a question about the odometer, is it suppost to click (herky jerky movment the tenths of a mile roller? or is it suppost to be smooth?) mine is jerky.

also noticed my speedometer is 5-7 mph slower than actual.

the numbers above are from the OD reading which i think is a bit off.

Do'nt know what speed you were off at but would say you are about 10% slowon speedo reading. Odometer would probably be the same error. YOU ARE IN SACTO SO GET ON INTERSTATE AND USE MILE MARKERS ALONG SIDE ROAD TO CHECK OD AND SPEED

Well, even if your odometer is off by 10%, you are still getting really lousy milage for one of these trucks . . . I would say that something is wrong. Valves need adjusting? Brakes dragging? Drag chute needs to be cut off ?

dunno what else to check, going to do the fuel filter soon. valves being out of adjustment would cause it that much? i wouldnt even atempt this myself.

in tow driving i rearly get above 50mpg and it is a lot of stop lights.

I think once you get a quicker spooling turbo the mileage will pick up some. You won't need to romp on it so hard to make it move. Odo is jerky due to it being electric.

well last night was coming home and was pacing the wife(new jetta) the speedo is 10mph off. she was going 60 and mine read 50-52ish. so looks as though ill have to hit up the freeway to watch the mile markers to get a real MPG report.

i think its just age because the tires are not over sized or anything.
and the gears are stock

My Speedo is off by 17 MPH...

My speedo wires plug right into the speed sensor underneath the truck.

By following the previous speedo threads it looks like there should be some sort of adaptor between the speedo plug and the speed sensor.
I don't have over-size tires on it...

Is there any other reason it would read off by that much?

mines only off 1 MPH, first time check by Okla Highway patrol and the rest of the time checked with my GPS. So far so good..

The speedometer in my '92 reads about 18% slow- ie. reads 55 when actual speed is about 65. I'm guessing at some point in time the rear end was changed from 4.10 to the present 3.54 gears. Also, my 'check brake' and 'ABS' lights are on all the time due to incorrect timing signal of rear end compared to tranny. (I can reset the abs computer(behind glove box), and abs works for a short time before i get an error code #6-erratic timing) Since JiMMyCTD has a 4x4 i'm guessing this is not the problem, Unless... maybe rear was changed, but not front and causing poor milage also. My (corrected) milage is always between 14 and 20 mpg whether pulling trailer, or driving highway. Flatbed on mine would also tend to increase milage.

my truck gets 13-15mpg, the tires are a little larger than stock though. if i go by what the odometer is telling me im getting 10-13mpg. either way its a good excuse to swap in a nv4500 when i get the money.

The jerky is the speed sensor is getting messed up. The connector that screws into it has a square shaft that slips into the sensor. The square part the sensor is getting rounded. You need a new sensor. I like to put a dab of grease in mine to help out.

Fuel Filter

I would try changing you fuel filter and air cleaner. I was getting really crapy milage (10mpg) until I changed my air cleaner and fuel filter. I prolly need to adjust my valve timing soon too. But if I were you I'd try the 2 filters.
