exhaust in cab

I'm getting exhaust smell through my air vents when the a/c is on. The gasket on the cowl is in place and tight. What else could it be?

Cracked manifold? Just a guess, but that would be the first thing I would check.

Are you sure it's exhaust?

Have you had your oil changed recently?

Did they or you empty the overfow bottle?

I changed my oil last week and I don't have an overflow bottle. I guess it fell off and I have not been able to find one at a junkyard. What else could I use besides the OEM bottle? Could that be the smell? It smells kind of like grease but figured it was exhaust cause there are no signs of anything out of the ordinary.

Mine always smells for about 400 miles after an oil change, and this is with the OEM bottle emptied.

Extending the crankcase breather tube by adding enough hose so that it exits further back may help some also. Do a search on "crankcase breather" and you should come up with several solutions that folks have found if that is the cause of your smell. Checking the exhaust manifold for cracks is also a good idea because these manifolds are famous for cracking.
I use the Rotella (nicknamed "Rosesmella") and like phox says,,,, it always sells for the first few hundred miles after an oil change.

I have found that the engine has a greasy oil smell after an oil change. I have used both Delo 400 and Valvoline Premium blue, I get the same smell with both. The smell only lasts for 500 miles, the smell gets less noticable as its driven. Now since I moved my breather bottle (see link in my sig), the only time I notice the smell is after shutting down and getting out of the truck, I don't smell it in the cab anymore.

ok I have been searching the forums and have seen some members have used PVC to redirect the hose to the back of the motor. Now my question: How much oil does come out it and would it make the underside of my truck messy or get all over my camper while in tow? I like the PVC idea and will probably do that if it does not make a big mess.

Mines, not messy. You can keep the bottle (i did) at the end of the line. If you live somewhere cold do not run the line to far as the line can freeze and plug up with the moisture in there. And if it plugs up the crankcase no longer has a vent, pressure will build up and you will blow out some seals in the engine.

I don't have a bottle-mine fell off I guess. Would it make a big mess without the bottle?

It sounds like its time to relocate the crankcase vent for a few people.

Take a look in my photo gallery (PVC Pipe system) I got a vent system that works great and never smell the heavy oil odor again... The vents out under the truck back by the flywheel.

Very little oil comes out... I've never seen oil drops on the floor of my shop. No bottle!

Thanks Mopar. I will exit mine just like yours and hopefully fix the problem.

exhaust smell

I'd be willing to bet it is oil breakdown you are smelling. I also get what to me smells like raw fuel for about 300-400 miles after a change. Don't notice it at highway speed. There is a TSB on this issue. I had the dealer check this out originally. They, of course couldn't find anything. Then I researched it on the forums and found service bulliten. I would replace the bottle for sure if you can. Besides making a mess of things, it can really gum up the radiator and coolers. I would also check the entire exhaust system for leaks, just to be sure.
