Edge Drag Comp

Just got it hooked up last night, and WOW! This is the first significant performance upgrade that I have made (other than the prerequisite gauges and exhaust, etc.).

I have yet to tap the pump wire as I still am running the stock clutch.

Performance (by my "uninitiated" standards) is impressive. Once I hit 10 pounds of boost, he really takes off!

Now, I just need some more money. Any suggestions!

Thanks to JR for getting me set up and installed!

Re:Edge Drag Comp

hehehe I too once had a drag comp without tapped wire.... You wont stay that way for long. All I can say is prepare for replacing the clutch. You are running an EZ right now (same box when the wire is still virgin) You might be able to get away with tapping the wire and running on 2x3 max till you save for the clutch.

My wire was virgin for four hours.... the clutch was toast in less than 100 miles. I put in a SBC Con OFE 13x1.25 clutch and flywheel the next day. Haven looked back too hard since. I now am running dcomp and dd2's.

I say tap it and use it sparingly till the clutch.... You thought the box itself was fun.... level 3x3 is all ;D ;D ;D and level 5x5 is Just watch the heat she'll heat right up on you without more air.

Addicting Ain't it?

Take care

Re:Edge Drag Comp

BTW set your box on 1x5 and you should get all your power at 0psi..... even if you dont have the wire hooked up.

Take care

Re:Edge Drag Comp

Oh one more thing.. Hate being the bearer of bad news but 1998.5-99 or so was infamous for the pump not liking to be tapped. If you tap it I suggest staying close to home for the first twenty miles or so. They either like it or dont and if you have it tapped for the first few hours they usually make it.

Just a thought

Re:Edge Drag Comp

Mark:

Thanks for all the info. I just replaced the lift pump yesterday. Original one had 130k + on it!

I am still grinning from ear to ear, and can't wait to upgrade the tranny. Most likely hit it all at once - new clutch, input shaft, etc. Not the most "fun" upgrade, but from what I understand, this needs to happen next before tapping the pump wire, or playing with new injectors / turbo(s) and so on.

Yes this bug is addictvie! :

Matt...I believe marksmith was talking about the injection pump on the 98.5/99s...for more info on that, there are several good articles out on the 'net.

Here is a link to some good information:

Hope this helps!

Ramflasher thanks for posting that link. I read that info a few times before I tapped my wire and I couldn't for the life of me come up with the link. Thanks again for the link.

Take care

Re:Edge Drag Comp

Mark...no sweat on the link. I remember tapping my wire back in the fall of '99. I bought a blue chip box at a BD dyno days event, and a few days later a couple of buddies were gonna come over and help me. Well, I didn't really want anyone to be around me if the pump failed, so I got up early and tapped it, and went for a spin. It worked great, and even tho I have since changed to a drag comp, I loved the blue box!

I must have called Jane at Blue Chip a hundred times with questions before I tapped the wire. I think she could recognize my voice on the phone if I called her right now! Nice lady, very good at helping.

LMAO! And all along I thought I was the only one that was afraid to make myself look the fool by tapping the wire and having the truck die! I did the same thing. I tapped er and before anyone knew I did anything to the truck I drove it for a few days. I figured all was clear and then proceeded to let the cat out of the bag.

I have been tapped for 27K miles. I figure I dont have to worry too much about it going kaput.

Take care

Re:Edge Drag Comp

Yup, figured Mark was talking about the injection pump. I just thought it was about time for a new lift pump, and am glad I did it. Was at 6 psi idle, now at 11. WOT it gets down around 7.5.

What alternatives exist for the VP in terms of upgrades? I would like to make sure this is all up to snuff before tapping the wire. I am also looking at upgrading the fuel lines, banjos, etc.

So far, the stock clutch is holding nicely, and I have seen over 1 mpg increase in fuel economy!

Re:Edge Drag Comp

I can only repeat what was said about the early comp-fried injection pumps. Mine died on the first 5x5 pull. Keep it close to home so you can get it back with out too much trouble. Having a couple grand laying around for a pump is a good idea too

Re:Edge Drag Comp

There really isn't much you can do t help the injection pump...here is what I do to try and preserve it:

I increased the size of the fuel lines, and eliminated all of the banjo bolts.

I run a fuel conditioner in every other tank. I use amsoil, but stanadyne is very good.

I monitor the fuel pressure from the lift pump at all times. Dodge's number was 10psi at idle. They changed a bunch of lift pumps out and now have dropped it down to 8psi at idle. Personally, I think 8 is too low.
