Ok, I've got an 04 cummins with a BD TD and an Amsoil drop in. Other than that, it is stock. A couple of weeks ago, the truck randomly died out as if it ran out of fuel. Then it did it 4-5 more times that day. I wondered if it were the BD, so I returned the truck to stock, but then it did it one other time, so I wrote it off as water in the fuel as I had just tanked up.

Well, since I have run out of that fuel and retanked a few times, it has been going well. Today I decide to put the BD back on and a few miles later it does the same thing. The engine sputters a few times as if its running out of fuel then dies. So I pulled over and tried restarting, every time, it just died again. I got the BD and put it to "NO Added Power" and came home fine.

I don't know if these are coincidances (not spelled right I know) or if I have something else going on like a fuel pump. Anyone got any bells ringing after reading this?

As far as the lift pump, I don't know. I bought it just over two years ago. It now has 132k miles

Is your pump still on the fuel filter housing ? If so, it's probabaly the original one.

ok, so I left my TD on stock power and it worked for a while, now I'm letting the truck sit till I get the fuel pressure tested. So that brings me to this question. The dealership didn't want to just do a fuel pressure test (wanted a whole diagnostic), but after reading here and elsewhere online, I'm 99% sure that it is the lift pump. So anyone know of a good pressure testing tool? I looked at Adv Auto, but they don't carry ones for diesel.

Why don't you just replace the lift pump with a fass, airdog or what ever. Then get a fuel pressure gauge. Sorry dude, it's really hard to hear your problems and knowing the solution......[dummy]

The pump craps out and won`t push the fuel volume. If you want a easy way, disconnect the input supply at the cp3 banjo bolt and turn the key on and bump the starter without starting the engine with the fitting in a container. Takes two people to do without making a mess. If the pump is good you should see a volume of fuel fill the container, say about a quart in 30 seconds. But really you got the original pump mounted on the filter housing right. Replace it with aftermarket or get the original from Geno`s (TDR)
