Thumbs up Day off from work = Working on truck

Hello,

Well I spent my day off working on my truck. I finally took the time to take the radiator out and clean it since I relocated the puke bottle. Man was that thing dirty!! I used a couple of cans of cleaner and also took it to the car wash to get it nice and clean. The biggest pain in the rear was getting the windshield washer bottle out. That took a little work. I installed a new thermostat and filled it up with G05. Hopefully it stays cool now when towing. Also, how can I test to see if the fan clutch is out before I hook up a trailer and find out the hard way? Thanks!!

As far as I know, there is no way to test it for sure. But if there is a good resistance while hand turning it, it should be ok.

If it is stuck on, so that it is always locked, you will know. The fan, when the clutch is engaged, makes a lot of noise since it moves a ton of air. Also, if the fan clutch was stuck, you would not be able to turn the fan very much, if at all.

There is only three states that the thermostatic fan clutch can be in :

Never engages = fan clutch does not engage when temperature rises, this is bad.
Normal = fan clutch engages and disengages as the temperature rises and falls.
Stuck = fan clutch always engaged, this robs some of the engines power, and hurts the mileage too.

My fan is normal, and when I spin the blades by hand they turn, there is slight resistance, and if I give it a good spin it will not turn more than 1 revolution.

Hope this helps.
