Boost elbow bad? & Pressure test Q
It feels like I have a boost lag – just doesn’t want to spool up very fast when taking off. I tried running a pressure test to see if I could find any leaks. I noticed the bleed hole on the boost elbow started whistling before the pressure gauge showed 2psi. At 10psi it was so loud that I had to tape it off in order to listen to the rest of the system (good ol’ duct tape) – even then I had to add extra pressure over the taped hole. Is this normal?
Through searching, I noticed several people mention building a gauged “plug” mounted on the turbo for performing the pressure test but nobody mentions plugging the boot at the air intake on the engine. I assumed that one of the valves would be open on the engine so the pressure would not build up. Therefore I pulled the boot off the air intake and plugged it up for testing. What is the best procedure for pressure testing?
