Hello folks. Looks like I'll be a member for the foreseeable future. Right now I own a 2000 Toyota Tacoma TRD, 2.7L 4-banger, 5sp manual, 4X4. I love that truck. It is a pleasure to drive and play with on or off road. Problem is that last week when I put new oversized off-road tires on it (BFG KM2s, 33X10.50-15) and was feeling pretty good, when I noticed a spot of rust on the frame. Upon closer inspection, it was a spot rusted through the frame. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. Toyota announced in 2005 that they knew about the problem and they did right by their customers: They either replaced the frames or bought back the trucks at 1.5X HIGH BOOK VALUE. Well, as it turns out, they stopped offering frame replacements for the 1997-2000 models and are only offering the buy-back now.
So, Toyota is going to give me a bunch of cash for my pickup. As I contemplated the matter, I quickly saw the opportunity to move up to the truck I really want. A Dodge Ram 2500, 5.9L Cummins, 6sp manual, Quad Cab Long bed. Now the issue is to find one in my price range with decent mileage.
I'm not sure which year I'll end up with, but I have been told to look at the 2004-2006 models. I doubt I'll look at anything older than 2000. I'm hoping to get one with under 150K miles, so it has the kinks shaken out already. A primary concern, other than cost, is fuel mileage. My Dad has a 2001 that gets 21-22mpg, no matter what kind of driving he does. That's what I'm hoping for (he won't sell me his). I plan to have the pickup for a long, long time. I just don't trade around with my trucks. When I have one I like, I keep it till it dies...or somebody gives me 1.5 times high book value.
So, that's my story. I'll be lurking and poking a few questions in here and there. My first question will be posted this morning: Which model year of 2500 with the 5.9L gets the best fuel mileage consistently? So if you have an opinion on that, look for the thread and please chime in.
Thanks,

Welcome! That sounds like a good bit of luck...
Just keep your eyes open. You can find a truck like that for around 20 k if you are diligent.
