Another g56 noise?
I tried searching, but couldn't find anyone describing the same noise that i'm having. When in 6th gear driving down interstate, the tranny will make a growling noise when I hit bumps. It seems to be getting worse. As most of my driving is highway lately, I haven't been able to make it do it in any other gear. I slipped my clutch with the programer on. I turned it off several thousand miles ago, and haven't had any other problems until now. Even with the clutch depressed it still does it, but doesn't seem to be as bad. Any suggestions? Clutch? tranny rebuild? It can be felt in the shifter, and seems to be coming from the rear of the tranns, but I'm not positive about that. Please help, as I'm driving the truck over 200 miles every other day!
Thanks

Ok, I checked the fluid level today, and it was full and red. I also checked the rubber boot under the shift boot and it was in place where it belongs. I also looked at the u-joints and they looked good. There was minimal slack in the drive line. The swing bearing had a little play, but not much. I could pick it up about an 1/8 of an inch. On the carrier bearing, there is a bump stop on all 4 sides. It was resting on the lower one and I could push it up about an 1/8" but seemed normal to me. Is this normal on the carrier bearing? I am going to try to look at a coworkers tomorrow to see what his carrier bearing looks like. Any other suggestions? I need to get this figured out so I can drive the truck. I'm concerned about doing further damage If there is a problem with the tranny. I called valair today, and he said if it was clutch related, It would do it in every gear. I drove the truck a few miles today, and didn't notice it. Maybe it's only when the truck is warm. I will have to drive it around to see when I get a chance. Oh, and I haven't found any shops in my area that will even work on this trans. ANY help is appreciated!
Thanks

I just rebuilt mine. Its a very simple tranny to work on. I would say that if you have a fair amount of mechanical skills, you can do this on your own.
I pulled it apart and took the counter and main shaft to my local trans shop and had them r&r the bearings.
Done this for under 500. Got the bearings from Standard Transmission in Ft. Worth, 335 shipped and that included shims and seals.
I have 325k on mine. Had 320k when I rebuilt it. Its seems to be working great and is quiet again. I had a input shaft bearing failing. It made a machining noise and a click click noise in all gears.

Ok, thanks! I will look into that. One of the local shops said they broke a 10 ton press working on it and that they were hard to work on. This scared me. Right now I don't have the time, but may soon. Did you have any reference material, or did you just wing it?
Thanks

The main shaft bearings are a tight tolerance. The tranny shop said they had to heat em a bit and they eventually came off.
Its not too unusal to have real tight bearings on a tranny. I believe my tranny shop had more like a 25 ton press. They said getting under the bearings were the hardest part. They heated them to protect the tool that went under the bearing more than to protect there press.
Anyway, good luck. Id write a how to article, but just dont have the time. Most any tranny shop should be able to find a shop manual on this trans. This trans is simpler than most.
Maybe call standard transmission. They might be able to better help you. They are very fair people to work with.
We dont really know your exact problem though, but I thought Id add what I know about the tranny. Good Luck!
