89 towing
89 towing
i just picked up an 89 w250 for what i think was a good deal ($1500) 99500 miles very little rust over rear wheels i have had 3 other 1st gens all intercooled all the free pump mods this one has all the has never been mess with and feels all most as strong. but any ways i was thinking of selling my 2000 24v 4x4 and was wondering if this 89 would tow about 11000k (trailor and powerwagon pulling truck combined) o its and auto trans
i dont tow very often but i doubt you will have any troubles as long as the pumps hasnt been cranked!!
ps after your dont towing crank the pump!!!!
your 89 will feel like a hot rod compared to those intercooled thingys!!!

I'd get gauges and at least a good converter if you want to tow. The 3.07 gears aren't the most desired for towing, but you shouldn't worry with 11K.
I would also suggest an intercooler and possibly either an HX35 or an intercooled H1C for better cooling while towing.

They were built to tow from the factory so i'd leave it alone IMO.
Maybe upgrade the torque converter, get some gauges, make sure its getting full throttle travel and have at it.

imo, the truck needs an intercooler and a turbp upgrade to really be efficient. they will pull stock for sure, mine will pull anything in 3rd up most any grades, but I can still peg the pyro, and Im very close to stock fueling. When you crank the pump, you will forget about your 24v.
The truck needs an EGT if it has been turned up and if your towing that much weight it will need a trans. temp gauge and additional trans. cooler. The gears mean absolutely nothing to this engine, it has the torque to pull. The problem will be towing at interstate speeds and the transmission heating up the engine coolant thru the heat exchanger. No OD really effects the early non i/c when towing heavy IMO. When I first bought my 89' it was a DD tow rig, in town and around the metro area it was fine, out on the interstate on very hot days driving 75-80mph it would heat up on long trips. If I slowed down it would be fine, the temp would drop before you could come to a complete stop even. The OEM converter sucked bad, even a cheap upgrade is better.
