Adding extra power for towing.

I am about to buy a fifth wheel toy hauler, and figured I would need to make a few upgrades to my truck. I have an 03' 2500 Quad Cab Long bed 4X4 5.9L CTD with a 5 speed. I already have a 4" turbo back stainless exhaust system, and an AFE "Bladerunner" stainless exhaust manifold installed. I'm planning on getting a "Smarty SSR" and an Edge Insight CTS for it's gauges and ability to work in conjunction with the Smarty tuner. I'm also planning to install a BD exhaust brake. My question is, with a tuner, what other upgrades should be done to ensure reliability? And, with the added power will more fuel and air also be needed? If so, what air intake kit would work the best, and will new larger injectors, or some other fuel system upgrade be needed as well? Thanks!

With the extra power of the Smarty and a heavy load, you'll need a stronger clutch before too long. It's only a matter of time before the factory says all done.

You might look at a box to stack with the smarty like a TS MP-8. After that, you could get some mild injectors. Like a DDP 50hp. Then a Arson 3 CP3 upgrade and a Fass lift pump. From there a bigger turbo (twins?) and a water meth kit.

You see what happens? There is no end to the madness. Decide where your calling quits to the upgrades by what power you want and how much money you want to spend.

I say clutch, intake (with the Smarty), and be done. That's a strong truck and you have a good plan to start with.

Yes sir! A new clutch is one of the things I thought would be needed. Yeah, it is an upward spiral when you start adding power! I think with a tuner and an intake/cold air kit, I would have the increase in power I'm looking for. I just don't want to create new problems by making too few changes. The motor, and the truck for that matter have been very reliable so far, towing a tag pull 24' race trailer.

I would get just a Smarty S06 if I didn't have a place to tune the SSR. That takes a lot of knowledge and time to dial it in. If you can do it, then you'll be fine with the SSR.

Yes. The S06 will be easier for you to adjust yourself.

Check the file that is on it when you purchase it. You want the newest File that was released Oct 5 of this year. I've been having issues with an older file. The one I'm on now is been great. Link below.

I have the SO6, drive on SW1,3 or sometimes 5 when towing my 5er. 30K miles in the Sierra's. I've settled on 1 since it seems to keep the EGTs the lowest.

I'm still on the original clutch 160K total miles. I tow conservatively, keeping EGTs below 1100/1150 and my clutch has never even slipped....knock on wood.

Daily driving is on SW1 too, so I just load it and forget it. EASY!

Thanks for the info! I have so far installed the Edge insight CTS with an E.A.S. EGT probe, and a Smarty S-06 PoD tuner. I still have to install an S&B intake kit "I bought one that includes a new intake manifold horn" ,and a set of air bags from firestone. The air compressor, and BD exhaust break are still in the mail. As for the set up so far, it seems to work well, but I still have a lot testing different settings, and towing with it to do before I'll know for sure what works best for me. I do like the Edge insight gauge setup though, easy to read, and has a lot of extra features for warnings and such. If I wanted to I figure I could spend a few hours easy just playing with all the different settings for screen layout, trip and mileage readouts, service scheduling... too much to think about all at once, LoL!
