Need Help!

I have a 04 CTD All Stock....With multiple problems. 1. Truck will occassionally idle very rough, shaking the entire truck. It has no pattern, it has done it in the morning after start, mid day after being in a store for 5 minutes and at the bottom of an exit ramp after a 4hour trip pulling a TT. Have had it to the dealer and of course they have no idea and can't duplicate. They did the reflash and it didn't help. Problem #2 - A shudder in the rear durring take off. sound comes from both left & right turns. Problem #3 - Tranny is shifting weird, mostly on takeoff, check fluid and is ok. I have an appointment, but was hoping your comments would help me lead them in the right direction.

1. Not sure, moving or standing still? if moving, see 2.
2. Shudder, see this tsb. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/03-003-04.htm
3. auto tranny, not much help there

I had the launch shudder. It would shake the truck like it was going to fall apart. I put a spacer in, per the TSB and it fixed my problem. I thought it was a engine or tranny problem, turned out to be the driveline.

good luck.

1. not moving. Sometimes shutting it down and restarting will help. Happened yesterday morning after two weeks with no problem.
2. The shudder is mostly turning left, doesn't shake the truck(yet), dodge tried to say its normal, seems to be getting worse.

Change your rear end fluid. That may take take of the rear end shudder. If not, then pursue the TSB on driveline shudder. I had changed my diff fluid to Amsoil, and for some reason, it didnt like it. Could've been wrong fluid, or bad fluid, but I had horrible slippage and shudder when cornering and towing. Finally changed it back to factory spec fluid, and it was fine.

For the engine stumble: Check your MAP and fuel pressure sensor connections (the MAP has a blue seal on it, the fuel has an Orange seal. They are on the intake manifold, about mid point). I had lots of problems like that with my Quadzilla module on the 03. I think my electrical connectors were slightly out of tolerance, cause all I had to do was wiggle wires to get it to stop.

Check your codes!

I had a bad shudder/buck at takeoff before I knew about this forum. It turned out to be two missing plastic "rivets" in the lower fan shroud. At slight acceleration, it would pull the shroud part into the fan, cause the code, and defuel the engine. Then the part would slide down, the fan speed would recover, and then it would refuel, only to suck it up again as the fan speed recovered.

It never did it going down the road because airflow kept it in its normal position.

This took much longer to figure out (thanks, Eddie at Waycross, GA Dodge!) than to fix.

If the shudder occurs on turns, it sounds like your rear differential needs some friction modifier added to the fluid. P/N 4318060AB.

Oops. I forgot they changed the style of limited slip unit in the 3rd gens. Disregard my last post- I'm just a 2nd gen guy.

Thanks for the link. I think if you don't add the spacer, the driveline attacks its u-joints, steady bearing, pinion seal and pinion differential case bearing. U-joints go first along with steady bearing but may fail again. All the while the shudder ages the pinion seal and bearing. I've done the u-joints and steady bearing, fixed the shudder, but it's back some 50K km later. Now it seems I can sense some very small movement with the pinion bearing.

long time no post for me.

I replaced the ujoints around 30K, right after the spacer was added. I not have a whopping 90K and the ujoints seem fine.

Mine idles rough on occasion also and usually goes away after I restart it too... I really think its loosing fuel pressure between the lift pump and cp3... Try and turn on the key and let it sit for a second longer before cranking, it would allow the lift pump to build some pressure better..

I guess if you want a good answer, get a fuel pressure gauge and watch it for a while...

Have you changed the fuel filter lately?

The running rough is either a loose crossover tube for one or more of the injectors or a bad injector. Mine did it also until I F1 go through my injectors. When I pulled the injectors, that is when I found #4 crossover tube loose.

As stated above, have the TSB done for shudder when taking off. If that doesn't work add some friction modifier for a clutched limited slip diff. It will cure it. As far as the tranny shifting funny, it is more than likely the Governor pressure solenoid and transducer.
