torque converter? Fudge! not what I was hoping for before the holidays
Hoping to find some immediate assistance...From searching the board I believe my Torque converter is going KaPut....but...i hope I'm wrong...
After a boat load of normal driving today in my 06 5.9 CTD 4x4 megacab with 131k, my wife took my truck and ran to the store and when she returned said there was something wrong with the truck. She stated the brakes didn't seem as if they were working properly and that the truck was pulling forward as she was stopped at idle and the turbo was spooling up. (It has been running really rough lately, nothing like this, but i thought it was just the injector cleaner I've been using.) When she got home I took it for a spin and sure enough, it wants to pull forward in drive at idle as if the accelerator is being pressed down. (Similar situation in Reverse). You have to shift into N when approaching intersections just for peace of mind. Brought it home disconnected the Batteries for 10 min or so hoping it was some sort of computer glitch but to no avail...
I'm supposed to be heading home to Northern Idaho from California Thursday morning fully loaded with a storage unit full of my wife's misc treasures and construction equipment, as well as towing a vehicle on a trailer approximately 1400 miles with 4 kids and the misses... .... ... ...
Am I foolish for attempting this?
What are the statistical percentages of breaking down and perishing in the desert between Vegas and Salt Lake?
Will I destroy major mechanical and expensive parts in the process?
Is this something a roll of duct tape and tie wire will fix?
Will my wife be right in saying, "I told you we shouldn't go, you knuckle head!"
All kidding aside I've been a lurker here for a long time and learned a heap load of info but the timing of this problem just blows and I need some serious direction...
Thanks

With a load an the TC messed up like that you will find it almost impossible to get rolling from a stop. If you were running empty I would say go for it but not loaded.
There is a sprag clutch in the TC that is what gives you a "stall" so you can get the truck rolling from a stop, that has locked up and you have a no stall trans. It only effects functions up to about 40 mph and you can drive around the locked problem with good success. Empty but not loaded.
Sorry bud, your wide is right this time. Wishing you a happy thanksgiving no matter where you spend it.

just throwing the simple stuff out there-
all fluids up to level, no color change for 'old' fluids? check for any cracks in the tranny (at the bolt corners)?
just trying to do the simple stuff first.
our 04 one ton had the same scenario but was a crack in the tranny, and low fluid. but it pulled like a mule against the low speed stops.
be safe, communicate and take it slow.

gonna check the fluids this morning, need to move it of the incline where its currently parked and will certainly look for cracks.
as for the high idle....its bone stock as far as I believe... I don't know but assume it doesn't have it

If it is the torque converter what's the fix?
Am I mortgaging the dog and selling plasma to pay for a new tranny?
If so, anyone know of any good shops having Black Friday transmission specials in So Cal?

your truck has a hi-idle feature if you use the cruise control buttons, its a stock feature, that should be enabled, if not the dealer can enable it for you.

None of your high idle features or TC lockup have anything to do with this behaviour. Both the high idles deactivate when the brake is pressed and th elockup solenoid is either on or off with no in between.

^agreed but if for some reason the truck idle is too high, (binding throttle cable/faulty apps etc) its gonna wanna creep forward, not saying its a high idle issue from the cruise control, what if the brake switch is faulty?
again not saying its not a tranny fault, just the OP post sound to me like it was idling higher than normal, it it very well may not be

There are no cables to jam on an 06, it is truly drive by wire.
Idle speed is controlled completely by the ECU based on CPS readings. Just popping a good trans in and out of gear will produce a change and recalibration in idle speed. Any load on the engine triggers the ECU to increase fueling to maintain idle speed irregardless. Whne the sprag locks completely solid the engine will actually rev to 2100 rpms sitting at a light trying to overcome the lack of stall.
A bad brake switch is going to generate codes as it does other things also.
Idle speed problems would show in gear, neutral, or park and not be limited to in gear only. When the idle jumps like described the TC has failed. Its a typical failure in these trucks and even more so in the 06's.

yep thats the game plan as of now...Took it to Mike L at Inglewood Transmissions and thats the exact what he said...going have it replaced Friday
still trying to decide between a single and a triple disk...no mods yet but I do use the truck the way a truck is supposed to be used. Mike suggested a single but would a triple be worth the extra cost? don't really want to go through this again...

If you are not towing at or above GCVW go with a good lower stall higher efficiency single. A triple in the 05+ trucks has issues with the OD shift\lock strategy that needs trans tuning to alleviate.
