Crankshaft sensor: what purpose?

Hi folks,

Just wondering: what is it for?

I've been through my Mopar Diesel Engine Supplement book, explains every sensor except the crankshaft position sensor.
There's no tachometer in my truck, so what does it do?

Yes, it's a "motion sensor".
It's function is to tell the PCM that the engine is running.

It is also, as you said, to run the tachometer.

My truck did, just measures rotations of the motor for a tach. I'm thinkin my buddy's 90 didn't have one though??? so maybe just the 92 and 93's or intercooled ones did?

Pre-'92 did not have one factory installed for the PCM.

However, the over-the-counter tachometers for the '90 and '91s came with an add-on sensor to read the 2 notches in the crank balancer.

I recently bought a tach out of a '91 non-intercooled truck that had the notched damper.
Everything I have seen so far says that '89 and "some" 1990s didn't get the 2 notched balancer for the sensor to read.

I know for a fact that '90 and '91 had plug ins in the dash harness to support the over-the-counter tachs that Chrysler offered, as did the '92 and '93 dash harnesses, of course.

I have not verified if '89 had the plug in the harness, but I doubt that it did.

Mark,

Are you saying that all I need is to get a tach that connects to a connector under my dash, and I have an instant tach ? Do you know where I can get one ?

I have a 93 intercooled, and from your description above, it looks like I can luck out with ease of installation of a tach

yes the 92 and 93's should have the tach plug under the dash. I bought an isspro 5k tach and the wiring harness that plugged into it.
