URGENT---Power Steering Pump Question

My truck is in the shop getting the power steering pump replaced. They bought a $65 aftermarket pump, but found out afterward that they can't take the pulley off the old pump, meaning they now have to order one from Dodge for $375. Are there any other options I can throw at them yet this afternoon???

The pulley is a Dorman part. Rock Auto has them for $11. I'm not sure what part of the world you are in but $375 is way high for the pump assembly from the dealer. I just paid $290 CDN for one a few weeks ago. I couldn't find the pulley anywhere locally and went the dealer route.

Be sure your cap is venting. Some are defective and cause pressure to stay on the the system when the engine is not running. This will eventually cause seals and reservoir to leak. If it releases pressure when you take the cap off, you have a bad cap.

This may not be of any concern to you, but I bought a pump and pulley from Rock and when I installed the pulley I discovered that it does not need to get pressed flush to the shaft to line up with the rest of the pulleys.
Hope your shop knows not to hammer the pulley on or else it will destroy the new pump.

BTW, if your shop cannot remove the old pulley, it probably means that they do not have the correct removal tool.

Just had my pump replaced on 06. If you have Oreilly Auto Parts they will rent you a Pulley Puller and refund you the $ when you return it. The shop that changed mine did not have a pulley puller.

Sorry for the late update, but the Rock Auto pulley was smaller, and had one too few ribs, so it didn't work. The shop did have the correct puller, but still couldn't get the pulley off. Bottom line is I ended up with a dealer pump w/ pulley out the door for $700 installed. That hurt a bit.
