Fuel Filter or Lift Pump? URGENT

I was on the highway today doing about 65mph 1800RPM and all the sudden my power went away. truck was running but if i pinned it, the RPM's didnt go up. i started working my way over 3 lanes to the shoulder, clicked it in tow/haul and pinned it and the RPM's shot up, then went down and i pinned it again and they didnt go anywhere.

Got to the shoulder and it stalled. NO Check engine light. I put the bullydog on stock and the truck turned on, idled, gave it a rev to 1500RPM and then let it idle for a minute. Put it in drive, died. Over the course of about 25 minutes i got it turned on about 4 times more but it died instantly.

had to get it towed because it wouldnt start. I got it towed to the nearest dodge dealer and that is where it sits now. 60 miles from home on the highway and my truck craps out on me

With the key turned to the on position i finally got the CEL to come on. Shows "Lift Pump Low" and thats all i could get.

I dont do maintenance on my truck so i dont know when the fuel filter was changed last. Could this be a clogged fuel filter or am i needing a new lift pump?
I dont care what it costs i just want to know what i need.
Urgent help is much appreciated.

Sounds to me like classic symptoms of a failing lift pump. The only way to tell for sure would be to check your fuel pressure and/or volume.

That is the very reason I keep a spare Fuel Filter with me all the time and the wrench to change it out.

If it turns out to be the Fuel Pump then i would go ahead and replace it with an aftermarket one like FASS or a Walbro.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Christophers Dodge in Golden, CO sucks. simple enough, sucks. I am recieving horrible customer service. i havent found anything about my truck except that they did get my keys that i left in the key drop. Dont know anything else. They wont tell me anything and they dont care that i need my truck this weekend.

Your story matches mine exactly. Lift pump. The dealer will probably install the in-tank retro pump. If you're not in a big hurry and are willing to do a little work yourself, order a Walbro kit and spend a few hours to set yourself up right. It's a lot better to put the Walbro kit in BEFORE getting the in tank setup. But, then again, if you're more or less stock and need the truck, the in tank may be better than the filter mount pump. Especially if it's a warrantee job.

Just had my 04 towed to the garage with the same problem.

Just got back into town from elk hunting in the boonies only to start lugging like I was in the wrong gear...then the truck stalled! I thought I may have got some bad diesel and plugged the filter. Had it towed home and changed the filter but no new fuel filled the canister. Ah Ha...bad lift pump-I hoped! Sure enough after another tow...the Dodge folks put in the new fuel pump (the one in the tank). All covered by the engine warranty!!!

Apparently this is a common problem and Dodge is stocking the replacement part! Only took them a few hours to replace.

Back after those elusive elk tomorrow!

How many miles on the truck? I'm trying to get an idea of when mine will fail.

I replaced my lift pump @ 150,000Kms or 93200miles but I think that because I have a in the bed auxillery fuel tank is the reason that it lasted that long. The lift pump did not have to lift the fuel as far. I installed the Walboro pump by using the Glacier fuel system Kit. My old pump was still working and I did not have any problems. I chose to go with the aftermarket kit as I have heard on this site that the in tank pump is very little better than the filter mounted one.

Lost my lift pump at 38,000. Put my quadzilla on at 28,000. don't think it had anything to do with it. The fuel tank is a cooler place for a pump to sit than on top of an engine.

ive been modified since 3,000 miles. im glad they warrantied it. I think by running my boxes on the highest settings for so long, i just drained the fuel rail too often and heated it up a little.
