Lift Pump - URGENT

??? ??? ??? Before leaving on vacation I installed a fuel pressure gauge on you guys' recommendation, and very glad I did. Pressure at start was 14-15 psi at idle; 11-12 psi under load. While coming south thru Georgia, (on a Friday night) pressure started fluctuating, but didn't go below 2 psi, and the engine ran fine. A dealer in Alabama replaced the lift pump on warranty on Monday. New pump only showed 12-13 psi at idle and 10 psi under load, but pressure was steady. 800 miles later, near El Paso, Texas, the following sequence happened: truck dropped out of cruise control, check engine light came on, tachometer started jumping around. Engine continued to run fine, and fuel pressure was 10 psi. 30 seconds later, the engine started to miss and fuel pressure dropped to 0 psi. I put the 6 spd into neutral and started to slow down, to cool the turbo, but the engine quit and wouldn't re-start. Towed it to a dealer in El Paso and he gave me sh*t about the Edge EZ module, and said it caused the injector pump to go out, and the warranty was void. Long discussion later, and they tried a new lift pump and it worked, so more discussion and they covered it under warranty. This new pump only gives 10-12 psi at idle and goes down to 6 psi under heavy throttle, but is steady. 800 miles later (again) and I got home to Palm Springs. Seemed OK, but an hour later I started it to go get some lunch, and 200 yards down the street, the engine started missing, and fuel pressure was 0 psi. Nursed it around the block, parked it at home, and now I need help before I go back to a dealer. The local one is hostile, too. What do you guys think is causing the problem. Sorry for the long message, but............. Lar. :'( :'(

Maybe air is getting in the system.
Are you getting enough voltage to the lift pump?

I will also suggest a set of drilled banjos.
Also your injector pump might be going out.

Check all your electrical connections on the engine.
Also apply dielectric grease to your APPS/TPS and Map sensor.

With the way that the lift is dying out on you, I would hazard that you've got some kind of blockage in the fuel lines or the pickup tube. Drop the tank, inspect the pickup tube. Disconnect all the fuel lines and flush them out. Be especially wary of the inlet of the fuel filter canister. We've seen pieces of rubber (???) gather at the filter inlet and block flow. Reinstall everything and double check the banjo bolts to ensure that they aren't leaking. Replace the banjo bolt gaskets, if the Dodge dealer didn't do this.

Re:Lift Pump - URGENT

I've been reading the other lift pump thread, and will look at a Holley Blue today. Gotta climb under the truck too, and figure out what a lift pump looks like, and where it is. Then I can trace wiring and all. 2 different dealers have looked at this thing now, and I would expect that they checked wiring, etc., but I'll do it anyway. I tried to get the EZ off of there before taking it to the last dealer, (the one who gave me trouble) but the plug on the engine is rock solid - can't move it, and afraid of breaking it......and yes, I did unlock the little red slider. I'm nervous about taking the thing to another dealer and getting slammed. The thing that really has me going is the tach needle jumping around just before the 2nd pump quit. That seems to point to electrical, but I'm not familiar enuf with these things to diagnose it. Has anyone ever heard of an Edge EZ module causing this type of problem ??

I guess I should have asked this before, but when they replaced the lift pumps, were they genuinely kaput? Or did they check them at all? You may very well have a wiring problem/bad plug/moisture in the lift pump circuit and the short is causing hell on the rest of the system. The replacement may have jiggled the wires or gotten rid of the moisture for a awhile. I'd also check all the ground wire connections. Snoop around under the truck. I can't remember if the 2002's have 2 grounds to frame or 1.

Hmmm......I've got the 63 gallon Aero tank, and just filled it 100 miles ago. Can't drop that. Makes me think, tho' - coming down 95 in Georgia, I filled up at a small super discount place, like $1.35/gal or something, and problems started about 50 or 100 miles later. If it's blockage, wouldn't that show on FP gauge as low pressure ?? Why would it kill the pumps ?? Where is that lift pump anyway ?? Lar.

On the 1st one, I didn't think to ask. On the 2nd one, they wouldn't talk to me; just said, "It works - go." Too bad I missed you in Saskatchewan last month. Had a good visit in Naicam. Look at http:www.webpictures.homestead.com/03homepage.html Lar.

The lift pump is behind the fuel filter down and back towards the cab folow the fuel line & you will find it easy.

Re:Lift Pump - URGENT

check your inlet lines to the lift for air leaks too

had weird pressure problems..............changed my lift all was good for 2 days till I made a trip down to saskatoon then pressure went all to heck again...........found a hole worn in my main fuel line and the pump was sucking air

Well, it should show up as low pressure right from the start, but maybe you had some fine rubber in the tank and the swap would jiggle it loose, and 800 miles later it was built back up again. It shouldn't kill lift pumps though, and thats why I was wondering if they were genuinely dead or just assumed dead due to low pressure.

I had a customer who burnt up two injector pumps due to low pressure. They kept installing new lift pumps and kept getting 10 PSI at idle, so he kept towing heavy with it and burning out injector pumps. The final culprit was a little piece of rubber blocking the inlet of the fuel filter canister (thank god I was the mech working on the truck, just the supplier )

Re:Lift Pump - URGENT

If any remembers a previous thread, I did get a new lift pump that lasted about 100 miles and quit. Replaced it again and it is fine. Just a thought, they can be bad.
