I was kinda surprized today myself when mine went into high idle immediately on crank up. It was about 30 degrees ambient or so......maybe a little higher. Cranked up......and INSTANTLY it went to 1000 RPMS. I usually hit the high idle for a minute anyway but I was going to let the oil pressure build a sec then turn it on with my cruise control. But it did it on it's own and at a "higher" temp than normal. I finally just hit cruise and ramped it to 1100 rpms. A Pacbrake would sure be nice at times like this.

Gotta love this colder weather!!

Yesterday I drove to a friends house to drop something off and left my truck running, while I was standing there it went to high idle. It was about 33* and my water temp was 202*.

Do all 2nd gens with vp's do this? I have heard it before but didn't know if it was a factory thing or something to do with smarty.

It's Smarty reprograming of the ECM. Even if you take your Smarty back to stock the 3 Cyl. high idle stays in there!
I think the High idle (6 Cyl) is Factory.

Come to think about it.... I may have that backwards. 3 Cyl may be factory and High idle may be Smarty.
Anyone ?

The 3 cyl and high idle are all factory options......the Smarty just enables them. Needless to say i pluged in my truck last night.....just dont sound good when its doing that.....

Yeah... Dan called just to let me hear it. All those guys that got 3 cyl. starts at our GTG at Dans Shop (that very cold Sunday morning).... I never went out to hear them!
The exhaust sound is about like my Cummins sounded when two of my FireRings broke off pieces that bounced around inside the cylinders and stuck in the intake valves.

TexasCTD - I would not like INSTANT high idle on a cold Cummins. Aren't they suppose to wait 60 sec before ramping up? Second Gens do.

Yeah I thought so too. This was the first time I have ever heard it go instantly to 1000 rpms on high idle. I have only heard it high idle 3 or 4 times and it will usually wait a minute or so. Not yesterday.

I would prefer it to stay lower for a few seconds and build some oil pressure. But mine really sounds fine running the 5w40 oil. It sounds so much better than it did running 15w40 Rotella when cold.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like many, I'll be out of town.... till Saturday. Going to my daughters in Boston. (Brrrrrrrrrrrr).
At least I get to drive my other diesel (Jetta).

Already got my best x-mass present! Sold the rebuilt primary (from my twins) to a member in Florida who is building a Sled Puller. Going to use it as a single in the 2.5" pulling class! Should work well. BUT....he wants to run it on the street too?? That should be real interesting.

mine high idle'd on start up instantly yesterday, so if it is supposed to wait then that it one more issue with my ol goat. i think i will jsut drive it till it dies.

now she keeps popping fuses for the clearence lights i installed, so with some testing to make sure thats the problem. i might have to pull the headliner again what a drag. i'll start by unpluggin them in the passenger side A pillar.

I figured that was going to make national news! I wasn't at the scene because I was busy with 12 other calls during our shift (me and rookie)....but I heard it all (the investigation).....live on our police radios.

Apparently Susp went postal.....and started randomly shooting at people in Garland and Dallas near Jupiter, Miller, Plano RD, LBJ. Killed 2, 1 injured, 1 shot at and not injured.

And a former Utah state trooper offed himself after a different standoff in Garland too. Don't think it was related to the other shootings.

Pretty sad.
