wt.-distributing or new receiver hitch?
wt.-distributing or new receiver hitch?
I just bought a used 24' travel trailer that weighs 4700# unladen with a tongue weight of 580#. The receiver in my truck is rated 500#/5,000#. I was wondering if it would be better to upgrade the receiver and put some weight on the truck to smooth out the ride or should I go with a wt.-distributing hitch? FWIW, the truck's getting a new steel shell next week and also either way I go I will install a sway control.
Thanks, Chris
Re:wt.-distributing or new receiver hitch?
I think if you've got a TT w/electric brakes, it would be worth your while, and comfort to operate with a WD hitch. But I wouldn't let not having one stop me from enjoying the trailer.

FWIW, I have more tongue weight on my boat trailer, but with surges, I am unable to use a WD hitch. The bars inhibit coupler movement which impedes brake performance. I've got 3 axles on the trailer and its pretty stable at any speed I've ever pulled her at.

If you're cost conscious, look around in the Pennysaver, etc., to find someone selling a hitch.
Re:wt.-distributing or new receiver hitch?
Since your tongue weight is about the hitch rating, use a WD hitch. Not a problem for the truck, just don't want to exceed the specs of "the weakest link". Just my $.02
