Who makes a diesel Class C motorhome?
Who makes a diesel Class C motorhome?
My brother wants to move up from his pop-up, and he's looking for a Class C motorhome with diesel power, which I'd imagine means a Ford E-350 or 450 chassis with a 6.0 liter these days. No, he won't get a CTD and a fiver, I already suggested that. Much more room for the wife, kids and dogs in a motorhome, and I can't argue with him there. I did some poking around on the internet, but it seems like they're all V-10 powered.
Re:Who makes a diesel Class C motorhome?
There is (or was) a brand out there called Scotty that used the Dodge RAM chassis to make Class C motorhomes. You could choose V10 or diesel, auto or manual, 4x2 or 4x4. It was very cool.
Problem is, I've NEVER been able to find them doing a web search, yet I still see them on the road every now and then. I just passed one about a week ago in fact.
I figured that with the new F450/550, they'd have switched to that platform since it would allow for much bigger units, but who knows. Since I can't find any contact info, I can't say.

I have seen one on the dodge pickup chassis but for the life od me at this time i cannot remember the name-so keep looking they are out there someplace--Glenn
Re:Who makes a diesel Class C motorhome?
Winnebago offered one but it wasn't the best floor plan. Kind of weird, out of about 5 or 6 floorplans you could only get 1 with the diesel.
As far as not going with a trailer and a diesel, has your brother ever seen the remains of a crashed motorhome? We saw a couple last year. That was the final deciding factor for us. Just seems to be much safer strapped in the seat in the truck.

Problem with the Scotty was that it was only rated to tow 3500#.
Problem with a "C" is that they seldom offer much in the way of storage compartments.
Good news is that the class A pushers are becoming a bit more affordable.

How long do you guys give it tell they make every one with a big motor home retake there drivers test and require them to apply for a cdl?

As they should...in my opinion. Some people have no business driving anyway....much less driving a motor home. :

Re:Who makes a diesel Class C motorhome?
As I understand it, some states like Califrnia are now requiring folks to have a cdl for 5ers, class "A" motor homes, and trailers. They also can not drive in the left lane at all and other rules I can't remember.

Re:Who makes a diesel Class C motorhome?
We have sold a lot of the New Chevy C4500's lately for farm and construction use. But I saw a pic of one on the web somplace in a class C setup. Those trucks would be really good in that application. Air ride seats, factory installed exhaust brake, the best big mirrors around, 5-speed Allison tranny, 19.5 rubber, 300 horse Dmax, and up to a 17,500 GVW with a GCWR of up to 26,000. They make a moterhome cutaway cab right from the factory, maybe somebody can mind a pic of one?

Special License requirements in Calif.
Those driving 40+ ft motorhomes are now required to have special endorsement on drivers license. This requires a special written test and a physical exam by an MD every two years.
Those of us towing 10,000#-15,000# 5ers must have a special endorsement for towing. This requires taking a written test for a non-commercial license. I have this endorsement on my license.
