There is alot of people asking how to quiet there generator(w/out buying a high dollar unit, so don't say it) but nobody has said 'do it like this & here's some pic's'. I know w/ all the wierd fabbin' we all do somebody has had to come up w/ something that works good. LET'S SEE IT !!!!!!!!!

 

I plan on building a box with 3/4" plywood and Celotex sound board. I would leave part of one side open and face that away from me. Design some quick assembly piano hinge/flush bolts to make it easy to transport. Assuming that it stays cool, it should help dramatically. With sound it's not always about killing it. Sometimes it's about redirecting it.

Consider the sound difference if your exhaust stopped under the truck as opposed to out back. If you give it somewhere to go, it helps.

 

Hmmm???? How will the genny get air circulation to stay cool and not burn up???

 

One thing you've got to consider is the cheaper genny's use an engine that is about the same a a lawnmoer engine, so with that, how can you ever expect it to run quietly? It's a genny built with the minumin to keep cost down. The little briggs motors have to run wide open to make the watts that's on the label.

Here's a quick test to do for noise before you shop for a generator:

If your shopping for a camping generator, setup your tent or camper in the yard or driveway, have someone start a mower and park it right outside the ten/camper. If you can sleep with that, then the $300 genny is for you.

Or whatever you want the generator for, if you can stand to listen to your mower all day long then a $300 genny is for you.

You need to see if you can stand the smell too. Those cheap generator engines don't run very efficient and the exaust fumes will choke an old plow mule.

You can also crank up the mower and park it next to your neighbors window while he's napping. If he don't come out and shoot you, then a $300 genny won't bother him.

If any of the above test get you shot, beat up, or sleeping on the couch, then you'd better pony up the $$$ for something better.

 

A true camping genny is worth the money. I bought a Kipor 3500 for $900 and it's very quiet. In fact, when camping with my brother, I can hear his Onan 5500 in his 5th wheel over the Kipor sitting out near the tongue of my trailer. If you camp with other people do them a favor and get a camping genny.

 

I bought my Champion for emergencies, like power outages in the winter, in which case the main problem with the noise is that it will draw in the neighbors who will hope to get a hot cup of coffee. For camping, I can definitely see use for a quieter generator. A loud gen at a nearby camp spot really gets old fast.

Ask the guy at the other end of the LARGE CORD!

The open face side should accomodate that. But, without argument, there is the potential for heat build up in my plan that I'm sure can be taken care of after the first design.
