I Found the Answer (to my ?)

I don't have the Minnesota statute number but here is what it says for private doubles:
Subd. 3c. Recreational vehicle combination
Notwithstanding subdivision 3, a recreational vehicle combination may be operated without a permit if:
(1) the combination does not consist of more that three vehicles,and the tow rating of the pickup truck is equal to or greater than the total weght of all vehicles being towed;
(2) the combination does not exceed 60 feet total length;
(3) the camper-semitrailer in the combination does not exceed 28 feet in length;
(4) the operator of the combination is at least 18 years of age;
(5) the trailer carrying a watercraft, motorcycle, motorized bycicle, off-highway motorcycle, snowmobile, or all-terrain vehicle meets all requirements of law;
(6) the trailers in the combination are connected to the pickup truck and each other in conformity with section 169.82

Interesting that the legislation recognizes the truck's tow rating as a LEGAL entity.

Re:I Found the Answer (to my ?)

As far as I know I am legal to pull both trailers. I do need to weigh the whole set up to verify legality. The fifth wheel weighs less than 10,000 pounds and the boat I don't know. It is a heavy boat (1960 fiberglass) so this summer I will go to the local truck stop and see what the scale says.
BTW statutes also state that it is not legal to tow a combination in the seven county metro (Mpls./St.Paul area) during the hours of 6:00am to 9:00am and from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Monday thru Friday.
Tom

Re:I Found the Answer (to my ?)

Hey Pappyman
I might be going to work for a company that is based in Blaine. I did look at the copy of the statues I got from the Mn State Patrol and it looks like the ONLY combination not allowed in the metro area during rush hour(s) is private doubles. I dunno maybe something to do with experience or something...............
Tom

Its really nothing to worry about I sure the DOT is not cruising the hiways looking ;D and most local police don't know the Vehicle laws well enuff to stop you...I had a towing business in Lino Lakes and at one time I got a tow call on 35w...when I got there its was a big rig double blocking the road during rush hour the cops said get it off the road...total length 97 ft towed it back to lakeville that way ;D

Re:I Found the Answer (to my ?)

Tom,

Your not a problem of being safe driver, its staying alive your self pulling your rig arround here (Twin Cities). I bought my CTD so when pulling my GN horse trailer if someone does something stupid in front of us my wife, horses and I will walk away. They may not (PE=MV2 with the 14000 GCVW with a 1200 lb engine in the head)!

Most drivers have no clue about stopping distances pulling rig. Most are dumb as rocks and over brake at the first bright red brake lite. They don't look how quickly the person in front is actually slowing down.

I never cut off someone pulling anything or a semi because I understand the problem. Also, I don't want to die...

Re:I Found the Answer (to my ?)

I agree Srigs........I have held a Minnesota class A drivers license for the past 24 years. I was in 47 states and 4 provinces of Canada in one year with a semi. I have even pulled a trailer stretched out to 60' long with a 9' overhang thru New Jersey. I used to pull a lot of oversized loads. I thought they were fun. But the average John Q. Public has absolutely NO IDEA as to what it takes to stop OR even drive for the other guy. From what I have seen, a lot of RVers that only pull one trailer shouldn't even be in the seven county metro area until they take a driving test. I think that quite a few wouldn't pass.
Tom
