What gear to start out in?

This may sound a bit stupid, but I have a little disagreement with a relative about this.
She told me that she starts in 3rd gear nearly all the time. Even when pulling a 12,000 fifth wheel.
I say, to avoid burning up a clutch (6 speed) she should be starting no higher than 2nd when towing.
She said the dealer even told her that 3rd was ok to start in.
My last comment was, "Your clutch, your money!"

Am I wrong in my thinking?

Towing 11,000lbs,I couldn't start in 3rd If I wanted to.

I'd REALLY have to slip the clutch to get her rolling in 2nd.

I guess that she learned her lesson. I am in the process of replacing mine also and they are not cheap, been saving for it for a Long Long time and now I am like a little kid in a candy store waiting for it to come in.

First is a granny gear and only needed when towing heavy. Empty or light 2nd is fine to start out in.
