well a 2nd gen hitch fit a 1st gen?

well a 2nd gen hitch fit a 1st gen?
Ok I have been told a 2nd gen will fit a 1st gen, and I have been told they are not interchangable, yet Curt manufacturing has there big 12K with the exact same part number for both trucks.

Does anyone know FOR SURE?
