Trailer brake repair

The trailer is a '94 Kit over 24' long. The brakes are not working properly and the linings look about worn out.
How do I determine who manufactured the brakes so I can get parts? Or, should I just replace the whole thing backing plate and all?

Thanks

The brakes on trailers and pretty standard. On that trailer you probably have 2X10 brakes , axles made by dexter. Just take them to a auto parts store, they should be able to match them up. Check the bearings and replace if needed.

Thanks clifford, I guess I'll soon find out if they have return springs and grease seals. I noticed that the electrical connections aren't water tight and poorly done. Nothing like another project! :

Re:Trailer brake repair

There is a place called Agri Supply here in Virginia that sels the whole backing plate brake assembly for just a little more than the shoes cost.
There is a site, www.redneck-trailer.com that sells everything for trailers that I deal with also.

Just go to your local RV dealer, anyone worth a penny will carry the whole assembly for about $40 - $60 dollars. Then all you have to do is unbolt the old ones and bolt in the new ones and hook up the wires.

Yep, what he said. These are pretty much throw away components.

Re:Trailer brake repair

I've noticed in the Camping World catalog the whole works for $53 - $64 each. What do shoes typically cost? What are the odds I'll need oversize shoes after turning the drums?

Re:Trailer brake repair

The brakes should cost about $20.00 a aset so it would be $80.00 they don't make over size brakes if turned to much you replace the drums, should be stamped max Dia. on the drum.

Re:Trailer brake repair

I'd read in a RV repair book that if you increase dia. by .045 your s'posed to get .030 oversized shoes. Just wondered if there was anything to it. Guess I'll start by pulling all the drums and take them in to see what I got.

Thanks, Chris
