My first tow!
My first tow!
I just got back from an 800 mile trip through pennsylvania. I towed a small popup about 3500-4000lbs loaded. When i left i had about 600 miles on the truck now about 1400. I averaged about 15mpg at 65 to 70 mph. Plenty of power to pass anyone i wanted and plenty of braking power since i had some problem with the trailer brakes not working. All in all I am very happy with my truck. However has anyone figured out what causes that engine vibration it gets really irritating after 800 miles.

Hiya Dan:
I don't know if it's the same thing, but I notice a heavy tapping/knocking sound that I think is the high-pressure injectors doing their thing in a diesel; if it isn't normal, I'm sure someone else will enlighten us....
I hope it IS just normal ops, but I know what you mean by 'irritating after some miles'! :P
Happy towing -
Rene

Re:My first tow!
Ahh, the soothing sound and feel of power. The vibration and knock is caused by the 40something to 1 (i think?) compression ratio. The reason that diesels don't have spark plugs is because there is so much compression that the pressure alone ignites the fuel, no need for electricity.

What engine vibration? Mine is smooth as can be at 65 to 75.
Had some wheel vibration when I first got it - - tire balance in the front took care of that.

Same here FiverBob,
I really don't notice a lot of vibration at any speed, but at 65-75 MPH it's as smooth as any gasser I've owned and a whole lot cooler to listen to. ;D
