Trailer brake controller questions

I bought a Suretrac car trailer a few days ago. This is the first trailer I have ever towed with electric brakes. My truck had a controller install already when I bought it. Its a Valley Jounrey 2 or something of that sort. for 2 years it has been collecting dust down by my knee. I towed it about 100 miles home empty with no issues. I was able to get the brake control set up to what seemed about right where the wheels didn't lock up and I could feel it slowing the truck. The digital display was real touchy and the #'s where all over the place. It seemed to work well though. Anyhow tonight I was bringing a car home with it and so I decided to play with the settings. Now the brakes go to max the instant I touch the brake pedal. The gain adjustment wheel does nothing. I was able to wiggle it and got the #'s to stay somewhat stable and move up and down. However then the gain wheel fell into the controller. I'm kind of thinking this think has cashed out. Is it worth trying to fix or should I just get a new one. and on the the new one any suggestions?

These all will just splice in to my wires that are there already? I'm going to get this P3 since from other posts it seems well liked.

I'v had my prodigy for ~6 years and no problems. I pulled the prodigy out of my F150 when I sold it, so I could put it in my Dually.

I would not hesitate to buy another one!

Well I just got done putting in my P3 controller. Looks like it will be a nice unit. I can't wait to try it out. The Journey unit I had in there seems like an empty plastic box compared to the P3 which has some mass to it.
