Trailer brake controlers

What's the latest and greatest on a non vehicle specific trailer brake controllers I can put on my 1st gen? The one I got doesn't work very good. Can't adjust the power output. It's all or all.

Top? you had any luck with your efforts on the old BrakeSmart? Cougar, if you can find one, it might be worth looking at.

Had one of those on my old 81. It needed an external resistor to limit power. Sense it was in line it did it in a linear form, making brake control awesome. I have a new Bendix 761-2016 on the shelf, but I can't find an external resistor to go with it.

1 axle draws about 6 amps. If you want to drop the voltage from 12 to 6, 1 ohm of resistance would do it. An ordinary past era ignition resistor works just fine. If it's too much, use 2 in parallel.

Anyone have one of these laying around. That's what I had on my 81. i tow a variety of trailers and their weight always changes. This lets me dial in each one.
