Trailer Brake Breakaway Cable
Trailer Brake Breakaway Cable
Where, and how do most of you attach your breakaway cable to the towing unit. I used to just use a small clevis and attach to one of my safety chain loops in the bed. After reading the info on my newest trailer, it says not to attach to any part of your hitch mechanism, like the GN ball or any other part which may come away in an emergency (like the loops?). Also it has always seemed to me that the safety chains would take up before the cable would activate the brake. That may be preferable.
Always seemed so easy before.

I attach my breakaway cable to one of the tiedown points at the back of the bed, just making sure that nothing interferes with the cable that might cause it to get pulled in a turn.
I would think you'd want the chains to catch before the cable is pulled, as the breakaway would only be used in the event the trailer gets totally away from the truck. Otherwise you'd have the brakes fully applied while the trailer pulls on the safety chains which would just make things worse.

I've got a receiver hitch on the back of my truck, and I just took a decent sized eye bolt and some washers and bolted it in the hole in the bumper where you'd put a trailer ball if you didn't have a hitch. Had to shorten the bolt some, but it works great and is DOT legal, you see a lot of guys with the cable hooked to the saftey chain hooks, which is a nice fine from the DOT super inspector teams that we have here in the "Because We Care" state of MD.
