I've been working in New Orleans for 4 months and will be returning next week. (drying buildings) I have a slide in camper (2500lb and 8000lb)equipment trailer (single axle, pintle) that is still there, the truck handles it just fine.
I was thinking of bringing a small sail boat back with me to sail on the lake when I'm not working. It weighs less then 1500lbs, and I was wondering about towing it behind the other trailer from New Orleans back to the Ca. I know its not legal in Ca. but I can't seem to get a straight answer about doing this, and if its legal? Any help would be appreciated.

 

Sorry to say put the answer to that is no. When pulling DBL trailers the first trailer must be on a pin (5TH wheel or g neck) And the first trailer must be factory approved for a rear hitch. If you do a search here you will get more info on this. It was talked about just a little while ago.

The legality of tandom tongue pull trailers goes on a state by state basis. For example, they are legal in Utah.

 

It's legal in TX but I don't know all the particulars

 

Load the boat and trailer on the other trailer. In Oklahoma and most states ball to ball towing is illegal, fifth wheel to ball is legal, now pintle to ball is another question. I wouldn't try it,as it might not be worth the hassle. Goodluck,,Rick

i flat tow my jeep behind my rv all the time, with two bumper pulls you will be illegal in most states including AZ which you will have to cross

towing two bumper pulls will get you killed. if you absolutely must do it make sure the front trailer outweighs the second other wise you will have your hands full

I called the state of AR DOT a couple of days ago to find out about towing our camper, and boat together. It is legal in AR, but she told me total length (truck+camper+boat) could not be over 65'. I'm about 68'

 

Legal in CO aslong as you have it under a total length of 80 feet.(called the DMV myself and that's what they said) no need for a gn or 5ver hitch...both can be bumper pull

 

Arizona has length restriction of 65' and the first trailer can be 5th wheel or GN but must have brakes.

Mopardan, I have the same problem, my rig comes to 57' without the tag trailer!. I want to tow my Quad behind the 5ver, so trailer has to be less than 8' total length.

The first trailer weighs 6500lbs and I cant put the second trailer on top and the second trailer weighs 1200lbs and is 23ft long. I believe the first is 22ft. I'll have to measure the truck 2000 QC long bed?

Any body done wind surfing on lake Ponchartrain? with Alligators and snakes?

I disagree with double bumper pull as the lead trailer loses too much weight periodically on the tongue unlike a 5th wheel which is usually 3-5 times as heavy on the hitch. Also the geometry of the doulbe bumper pull causes it much more violent reaction with quick adjustments of the steering wheel at high speed. Very few people are experienced enough to pull 1 trailer and know what happens in the case of emergency evasive driving let alone 2 trailers. PK

 

I pull a bumper behind my goose all the time (see gallery) all over OK. I also at some time pull my little flatbed behind my smoker (also in gallery). I'm sure the smoker doesn't have a 'factory approved rear hitch', but I also have been by troopers and city po po's and have never had a problem with them. I was told by a city cop that as long as I was under height and under width, that length wasn't an issure as long as it was safe. I dismissed that as soon as I heard it. I am pushing the 65' mark with the big trailer.
