Towing Temps

This subject has probably been beat to death but I could not find alot on a search. My total weight of truck and 5th wheel is just under 20,000#. While climbing some sustained hills in my home state of Co. I am getting temps upwards of 1200 degrees speeds around 60mph. Should I be backing off a little or are these temps ok for sustained climbs. What are other people getting for temps with a similar setups? Thanks.

Re:Towing Temps

I've been told that my EGT should not exceed 1250. So I back off to keep it close to 1200 when towing uphill. On occasion a down shift is required.

I also watch my tranny temps and down shift as required.

Re:Towing Temps

Yep, I'd back off a little to keep the EGT's in check. I once hit 1300 before I knew it, down shifted and went on my way. Just keep in mind, your not in a race to get to the top...take your time and enjoy the ride...

I once read that Cummins stated this motor can sustain 1300*-1350* all day but not any thing over. Whether you want to drive your truck that hot is up to you. I personally dont go above 1250* and rarely ever get near that.

Re:Towing Temps

Are you automatic or standard? You might try dropping to a lower gear and run higher rpm's, this seems to help in some situations.

Re:Towing Temps

My truck is a 6 speed manual, I should add I was in 5th gear and it was about 85 degrees out. Altitude was about 9500 feet (if that matters).
Thanks for your input.

Re:Towing Temps

I have many things done to my truck, most increase EGTs.
I tow anywhere from 7K to 15K often.
I see temps into 1400 before you know it.
I am also not afraid to run 1350 + allday long.
I have 70K on my 02 and it runs better everyday.

Re:Towing Temps

I know with my auto there is a increase in EGT of about 100 to 150 degrees from 4 gear (higher) to 3rd gear.

Jim:

Did you install the boost elbow when you added the EZ? I know that the manual says that you do not have to install it, but since installing my EZ with the turnbuckle (I have an automatic), I have been getting 30lbs max boost and max egts at 1,100 degrees even when towing my 30' 5th wheel. Prior to the EZ and turnbuckle, I could hit 1,200-1,300 WAY too easily. If you didn't add the boost elbow, I would highly recommend it.

Re:Towing Temps

I must agree with danlit. I tow in the moutains and see 1300-1350 alot easily. I have hit 1400 on many occasions.

Re:Towing Temps

I did install the boost elbow and get up to 30 psi of boost. I run the edge on the third set of pins, it gets a little smoky at times but I get more boost. I am considering getting the rv 275 injectors also. Don't know if they will raise or lower egt?
