Towing with a Mega Cab?
Towing with a Mega Cab?
I'm looking to upgrade my tow rig to a 4 door one ton dually & saw a few nice Mega Cabs.
Am I going to have trouble towing a big 5th wheel with one of those? Turning radius etc?

I tow a 34FT Fifth, no troubles, I have an unadjustable 2 5/16 goose neck ball thats is slightly a head of the center line of axle.
I have never got out a tape measure but Im thinking from the center line of axle to back of cab is the same on mega as it is on quad cab, just from that point on the truck is longer........
i have dented the back corner of my cab when backing and turning, but I know of quite a few quad cabs that have done the same.

If they did it like before, using the q cab longbed frame to put the mega on,
the 2010 should have a 7' 1" bed on it. Assuming they use the same frame as
the crew cab long bed. Wouldn't that be enough clearance for a fifth wheel
trailer?

I managed to outdo you. Unfortunately I did not snap any pics
. Front corner of my fifth wheel hit in about the middle of the curve in the cab corner at about the same height. Pushed it in a good 2", and moved the sheetmetal enough it completely closed the gap between the cab and the back window. I'm not sure how the back window never broke, guess karma figured the cab corner was bad enough (it was also pouring rain). I ended up using a screwdriver and a hammer to push (beat) the sheetmetal back to stop it from putting pressure on the back window. Figured the way it was, it may still break the window, if the window expanded in the sun or something. We were 12 hours from home so I really didn't want anymore excitment that particular trip.
Needless to say I now always slide my hitch back when backing up.
I have had no issues towing anything with my MegaCab. Being a short bed, at first I did keep an eye on corners and tight turning. I decided to get an offset coupler for my GN's, it set the trailers back some, right about 16"s.
I have seen crunched corners on 8' bed trucks thru the years with similar damages like pics posted here. Those squared box corners can get into a truck real quick. I like the tapered noses on GN trailers, gives you a little more to work with when it comes to tight turning. You DO have to be paying attention to al lot of stuff when towing and backing.

Friend of mine just blew his back window out on a long bed about a month ago, accidents happen. When I crunched mine I was loading in a cul-de-sac and got trapped in by a car that parked while I was loading. In an effort to not hit anything with trailer tail I wasn't paying attention to the cab and turned a bit to sharp, didn't know it happened until the next stop when I saw it.
I have pulled two different 5er's with my Mega Cab. I use a 15K Reese slider hitch and use the slide feature when ever I back up. Driveway or campground the slider is released and is extend backwards. The newer 5er's have there corners relieved to provide additional clearance, but I still use my slider. I also have the DW watching the cab and rear window.
My latest 5er is a 2010 Cougar 318SAB that is 35 ft long and has a GCVW 18,240 LBS. This is the truck and camper weighed togther on a certified scale.

i dont want to jinx myself....how does a guy manage to do this? i see not only megacabs like this at the bodyshop all the time. I guess it must be the driver

I never had a problem for years. Probably one of the reasons why. You kind of forget about watching that sort of thing.
This particular time was a situation where it was a way too long a day of travelling, pouring rain, and the worst RV park to try to back into. The RV park is so crappy they offer a "back in" service because the road is so narrow, and all the stalls are 90 degrees to the road. The back in service is actually a small articulating tractor with a hitch instead of a bucket.
Got there too late to get the back in service, and my male ego probably would have declined having it done anyway.

Just took the right set of circumstances, but ultimately I (being the driver) was to blame. And yes you just jinxed yourself. I look forward to hearing your story.
Who else can you blame but the driver?

These kinds of accidents happen more often to those that are not careful and are not very experienced.
For as long as i been doing this.....not once yet....

I dont believe in jinxin myself...wait. Oh Crap.
I thought it was near impossible to do as well............ BUT ......... when I did it, I was backing out of my own back yard, done it 1000 times, I didnt hear the cab dent, didnt see the cab dent, didnt know i did it till I spotted it like two days later.
It can happen to anyone, I have a Class 1 license and a fair bit of driving of A and B trains in the of road conditions of the oil patch............. alas no help to me...
I sure watch closer now......... ha ha

Slightly off topic but expected from me and somewhat related...
My biggest
was not checking the 5th wheel hitch jaws myself when backing up to hook up the 5er. I asked my ex if the jaws were open and she assured me they were. To add to this the landing gear was up on blocks so when I tapped the pin, the trailer slid off the blocks [still had wheel lock in between the drivers side tires on the 5er] and slammed down onto the bed rails.
. It had rained real hard and once it let up we wanted to get hooked up and go...the grass was wet and muddy and the trailer slid. Wow were the bed rails crushed. I lucked out in the next town...as I was rolling in I saw a utility company and there where all sorts of truck beds...all white, just like mine. Foreman said I could choose the bed I wanted and make a donation to their bbq fund for that wknd. I bought all the steaks/pop/beer/salads and camped there for two days while I swapped out the bed/rails/tank etc.
I did tag the roof of my old 90 Ram with the front of a car on the 3 car wedge one time...had to go into a deep dip and up on an angle to go around a wreck one time. Creased the roof but most of that popped out.
